Default Brain storm

I just had a brain storm or maybe a brain fart! But I kust got s notion that it might be a good idea to either buy a .45 cal barrel for my 700ml or have Bobby Hoyt reline my 50 with a 45 barrel. I see McGovern can make a SS barrel for about $200 +.
Twist rate choices are 1:16 and 1:24. With Hoyt I can get sny twist.
You guys that know the 700 ml, is the barrel threaded into the teceiver like a CF rifle with the breech/breech breecin the "receiver"? I don't have mine here to look at. If that's the case then it would just be a matter of unscrewing the old and screwing in the new because there is no headspace to deal with. Right?

Yes - the barrel screws into the receiver - just like a regular rifle

guessing you mean Bobby Hart?? LOL
he has some time spent on the 700 muzzle loaders, I'd ask him for his opinions or thoughts on things
Me personally I'd rather a new barrel over a liner installed, but that's ME?

Pretty sure McGowen knows the specs for adding a barrel to the 700ML. IIRC the tenon is a different length than a normal Rem700 but they made them before. You want a 1-20 or 1-22 if going with a 45cal 8 groove.

If that's the case then it would just be a matter of unscrewing the old and screwing in the new because there is no headspace to deal with. Right?
Its not quite that simple. It will need to be head spaced if going the Hunter bare primer 209 setup. A Remage style barrel makes it easier for the DIY guys.

Thanks guys. First thing I want to do is see how the .50 shoots then go from there.
I just like to think out loud and get as much info as possible before proceeding.

The McGowen Remage barrels start at around $370 but you would also need a barrel nut....I dont think that is included but im not sure. You lose some barrel OD going Remage and you will need it threaded for your plug. I would NOT use the Badger plug if you went that route. I would use the ASG 209 plug made to handle smokeless. That is a lot of cash to sink into a barrel and not have it designed to handle the extra pressures. The ASG plug also uses a tungsten bushing and will never need vent liners. It should work great with subs and BH209 as well.

We also proudly offer the Remington Smokeless Muzzle Loader barrels. These barrels are manufactured using the same high quality barrels you’ll find in our other Remington and Savage pre-fit barrels. We can make them to fit your Remington breech plug or the Savage breech plug in 40 caliber (400/408), 45 caliber (450/458) and 50 caliber (500/510) in a variety of twists and any contour on our website is available for these barrels. Muzzle Loader barrels are available in either Chrome Moly or Stainless Steel for an additional $40 to the base pre-fit prices below. We now require sending in the receiver, bolt, & breech plug for Muzzle Loader barrels, due to the variations in the breech plugs being offered out in the marketplace currently.

I was just maybe thinking Bobby hart due to he is I gather not too far from you in PA and I know he has been playing and building and selling modified 700 muzzleloaders a long time now
so he came to mind first for me on this model
so again he might be worth asking on too, Bobby Hart is normally a pretty fair guy to talk to,
I have known him, his Dad and grand dad, they were all good folks IMO

Called Hart and they don't do work with the 700ML. I asked if they could rebarrel on in .45.

Well that's new to me, as I know for yrs they were selling custom built 700 ML, they built for long range shooting with them and sold a lot of them over the yrs
but they did ONLY offer them in 50 cal. so maybe that's the issue?
no experience or likes with them in .45 cal?

sorry if my info above got you to a dead end

I would have thought they'd be more helpful toward one wanting to have work done on a 700ML?
