How to fix trigger pull

I have this Sharps 54 blackpowder rifle and the trigger pull is far too stiff.
Do I need a trip to a gun smith or is this DC something I could do myself?

I've never completely disassembled any percussion firearms.

Thanks

Polishing sometimes helps, my answer would be set triggers.

Well I never took the lock part of these percussion firearms apart.

I’ve never worked on a trigger before but did research it a few years ago to possibly do some trigger work. The consensus was that it is something that can easily be messed up if performed improperly making a dangerous gun. A local gunsmith around here does a great job and is reasonably priced, you may want to do some asking around and pricing.

If you have the capability to disassemble the trigger, and assemble of course, then a good polishing will help, but those triggers, even the pedersoli repro's, can be very touchy if you stone them too far. I goofed up mine and made mine so touchy a soft breeze hitting the trigger would let it go. That's okay on a bench gun but not something you would want to carry in the field. I would take it to someone with intimate knowledge of those trigger assemblies. Might cost a bit but a safe rifle is worth it.

Thanks HL!
Exactly what I'm going to do.
After I sight it in to see if some sight in use makes it better.
To best of my knowledge I dont think dear Ole dad ever fired this Sharps.
