Omega breech plug

Went out to do some shooting today with both Omega’s and noticed something interesting. The STS primers (Blackhorn 209, 80 grains) in one have a lot of soot on them, this Omega I’m trying to figure out an accuracy issue as well. Will this blowback affect accuracy at all? From research the breech plug may be flame cut? Looking for options. Interesting that the other Omega using the exact same setup the primers are perfectly clean. Thoughts? |
How's the flash channel? Have you cleaned it out with a drill bit?

real quick accuracy deal, is swap breech plugs and see if accuracy issue's follow! or things change
IMO< YES a breech plug can cause/alter accuracy, as can many other things from just a plain old BAD batch of primers to powder, to heads, to you name it, things all have to work repetitively to be consistent and accurate! |
Thank you for the responses. Yes the flame channel is clear and from more research it looks like there is flame cutting on the breech plug. It really makes a mess of things... |
Just a FYI
Rem STS primers are the shortest USA made primers Win209s are the longest and have about the same energy as a Rem STS primer. Measure the flash hole of your plug. If its .035 or larger its time for a new plug. Your flash CHANNEL needs to be cleaned with a 1/8th drill bit. Any other method is pretty much a waste of time trying to get out hard carbon. As flash channel volume decreases, pressure that reaches the primer increases. |

I depend on the reliable Winchester 209 primers for my Omega. Jury rig the 1/8 drill bit on a handle.
BTW...I heard from a shooter at our range last week --- That Thompson Center is not selling any parts for their past muzzleloaders --- Which includes the Omega. |
No need to "jury" rig anything. A hex shank bit in a nut driver handle works great. I got a cheap $15 Wheeler screwdriver set with me all the time but all you need is a 1/4" nut driver. Harbor Freight has el cheapo 1/4" rachets that work well too for like $3.

Using a drill bit will work but will eventually ruin your breech plug.
Thompson Center makes a kit for it that works better than the drill bit Its a breech brush and fire channel breech brush combo kit. I bought mine on Amazon for 6 bucks a couple months ago. I could not believe how much carbon I scraped out of the flash channel on the breech plug. Right now they are out of stock except for the 3rd party sellers that want 3 times as much for it. Wait till they come back in stock for 6 bucks. Its called a Thompson Center 9508 breech plug and fire channel cleaning brush kit. I use a can of compressed air to blow out the scraped off carbon while brushing I also liked the idea on another thread by a member here that used a steam cleaner to blow out the flash channel. |
No it wont. You wont hurt a thing using the bit by hand just the way Western says to clean your flash channel. Ive been doing it the same way since around 2010.
