barrel length

Does anyone know how much barrel length it takes to completely burn a given amount of black powder or bp substitute?

RE: barrel length

It depends on a bunch of things; barrel diameter, tightness of sabot, bullet weight, type of powder, and ignition system. With a good barrel like Knight the main consideration is type of ignition and maybe sabot tightness if you are using powerbelts. 209 ignition is faster and hotter which burns the powder faster. I think pellets burn quicker than powder. I shoot the pellets with a #11 CCI mag cap with a 300 gr Barnes in a 24" barrel and seem to burn the pellets completely. Some of the ballistics given out by Knight show an increase in velocity with 209 primers. Before I bought my Bighorn I asked Knight if I needed the 26" barrel and they replied that if using 150 grs of pellets I should get the 26" barrel, otherwise the 22" would do. I bought the 22" as I see no need for 150 grs of pellets and the recoil which comes with it.
