Somebody might need to correct me but it is my understanding that MAGs have a thicker copper jacket and perhaps hold together better than the regulars. There is also a chance that they don't expand as well at lower velocities. Do a search on the specific bullet and there is a good chance you will find a ballistics test done by ronlaughlin.

I explained this in a thread titled "Thompson/Center XTP Bullets in Mag Express Sabot explained" last year. I too had the same question. No one had an answer really. So I tried both regular and mags into water jugs and posted the resulting bullets and how they expanded.

I am not sure how to link to another thread so I'll try a url here goes otherwise search for the title.

Thompson/Center XTP Bullets in Mag Express explained

My deer load is 240 grain .452 XTP Mag over 100 grains by volume of Blackhorn 209. I get 1850fps from this out of my CVA optima. Its deadly on deer. Longest shot so far taken with this is 150 yards.

One difference is the 300g xtp magnum penetrates deeper than the 300g xtp.

I killed two deer last season with the regular 300 XTP in .452, both deer were heart shot with exit holes. One at 25 yds the other at 80yds, can't ask for better performance and penetration, so sticking with them in the Optima V2 rifle.
