Default Ed's Bullets

I was able to get out shooting today finally as I refuse to do any work on Sunday and it wasn't raining. Ed sent me a bunch of his 350 gr HP cast bullets a bit ago to try in my 1:30 twist Green Mountain .45 cal percussion barrel to see how they shoot. He is wondering what twist rate to get in a new barrel. I shot 3 groups of 5 shots each. (The 85 grain charge has 6 shots because I had called a pull.)
All shots were at 50 yards with open sights using a 1/8" felt wad below the bullet. Charges were 75, 85 and 95 gr of Goex FFFg and average velocity was 1248, 1307, and 1398 fps respectfully. Because of the oncoming rain I was firing pretty much as fast as I could load and swab between shots. With more time and a scoped rifle I believe the groups could even be better. But I am well pleased.
Group sizes were 2" (4 in 1.125") with 75 gr charge, 1.062" with 85 gr and 2" even for the 95 gr charge. I'm liking these bullets a lot. They are shooting right up there with my 370 gr paper patched bullets.

I too love those bullets Bronko. Good shooting there buddy.

Jus curious here. I know you've had that barrel a while. How many rounds would you guess you've shot out of it at this point?

Van, not a whole bunch. Maybe only 100 or so. But it seems no matter what projectile I use I can find an accurate load for it some where between 70 - 90 gr of FFFg or Pyro P.
But I didn't notice until I took a shower later that evening but although the recoil was moderate at worst I was shooting in a T-shirt and the butt plate screw took a 1/2"x1" chunk off the first layer of skin on my shoulder.
PS: your tip on starting at 75 grs paid off for these bullets. Both 75 and 95 gr charges were slightly larger then the 85 gr charge.

Im very fond of that bullet too. 70gr of BH209 by volume in an inline is a very comfortable load to shoot. Roughly the same speed as 90-95gr of Pyro P.

Well Just to double check I went out today just before the rain came to try my paper patched bullets out of my .45. I only fired 3 shots but that was enough to convince me that Mine shoot just as accurately as Ed's. Of the 3 shots fired 2 of them were touching with the second cutting half of the first and the third shot had about 1/4" separation. And this was without swabbing between shots.
The bullets are a 370 gr 11mm bullet (.446" dia) sized down to .443" and paper patched with linen paper bringing the dia up to .450". They are a slip fit barely touching the rifling but are accurate as all get out. I have to thank IdahoRon for getting me onto these. He sent me a couple to try and I was hooked.
Now this isn't to say Ed's 350 gr bullets are inferior to mine. I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to use his over mine. Both bullets hit the same elevation but his shoot slightly right of bull and mine slightly left.
Edit: distance was 50 yards.
