I love my .54 flintlock

I only shot it today at 50 yards (which is a long shot where I hunt the late season) to make sure it was all set to go. The barrel is a 34" custom one by Bob Hoyt with a 1:60 twist, iron sights, maple stock by Pecatonica River Long Rifle Co. and hardware from a T/C Hawken muzzy.
This rifle CAN shoot and the lock is the fastest lock I've ever owned. Ignition is about as instantaneous as I can perceive. Absolutely zero delay. After checking that it was sighted in I started shooting at my 8" steel gong from different positions and never missed it. It was really neat hearing the clang from beyond the cloud of white smoke.
My load was a home cast .535" ball, pillow tick patch with olive oil lube and 90 gr of Goex FFg. Goex FFFFg was used in the pan.

Sounds like a real nice setup and a lot of fun. That is something I always wanted to give a try. Are you limited to round balls or can you shoot mini balls in them too?

A number of years ago I was at a little gun-shop in PA called "Allegheny Crossroads" and the owner showed me a flintlock and said he hunted deer in PA every December. He told me a bunch of stories and sure got me interested.

He was saying that due to the wet weather in PA in December, he is almost to the point he doesn't prime his pan till he sees the deer coming down the trail.

What kind of groups do you get on paper?

I'm with you Bronko. What could be more fun than an accurate .54 flinter. (Well, I guess sex with a wild green eyes redhead could. But other than that?)

Sad, but true. Besides, that .54 speaks only when you tell it to.
