475 grain 50 caliber Conical
 

52Bore made these bullets; sent them, and we shot them. Range to impact was 25 yard. Powder load was 50g Blackhorn.

























The bullet went through all six jugs; bounced off the phone books, and was picked up from under the horse. More damage was done the second, and third jug, than to the first jug. This was unusual; the damage to the heel of the bullet also seemed kinda unusual.

In the first pic, the nose looks like its 2 piece, like its an insert/lip. Am I seeing something or what?

A couple of my molds for hollow point conical bullets leave a little ring like that. It's from the hollow pin inside the mold. The base of the pin leaves a mold ring. Though that does kind of appear to be bi-metal, I think it's just an optical illusion caused by that ring. It does look more like a drilled hollow though. Maybe the drill chuck left a ring? Never really seen a straight hollow like that. Always used a tapered pin set myself.
ronlaughlin, any idea what the hardness was on those bullets? Seems they would need to be just a touch softer for whitetail.

That's a little hard to imagine. Pure lead should have deformed much more than that.

NoExcuses bullet looks the same way and it's pure lead.

Wow. I'm amazed. I guess it's the weight or the slow velocity that 50 grains put it out at. My pure lead 350 grain .50cal conical bullets, well the only one I ever found, in the off side hide of an Elk anyway, mushroomed down to almost at the base of the bullet. But that was a slightly quarterd to me shot and hit right on the point of the shoulder. Found the bullet at the 6th rib about halfway through the hide. Chest cavity was a liquid mess. The evidence I've seen from the rest of the un-recovered were of extreme expansion with the exit wound being pretty massive. Started making them just a little harder for Elk.

I would have guessed far more expansion also.
