Can't shoot
This weather here in PA is ridiculous. It seems like its been raining forever and going to rain right up an through the weekend! Between the weather and Dr. appointments how is a guy supposed to get any shooting in?
All I can do in my spare time is cast bullets! |
You're not the only one that can't shoot :(
Although here in northern MI we've had weather to shoot, the docs won't let me shoot until one of my medical conditions is resolved. Hopefully tomorrow! At least if they get that taken care of, I can shoot. The range is dry so we can drive to the targets and not have to walk, which is the second medical issue needing resolution, scoping. "Old age is golden. They just don't tell you its fool's gold". |
I hear ya Bronko. Plus I just had surgery on my right shoulder so I can't shoot for awhile. Like you the only thing I can do if I'm careful is to cast some bullets.
|
Same pattern here in VA. I tried to shoot last weekend... ended up only getting 8 shots in. Only one time was there enough break in the weather to give it a shot. Soon the rains will be gone.
|
I love to shoot when its raining. Nobody ever comes to the range
|
Lot's of rain down this way also. Grass in yard getting high but ground is too soft to cut. I'm thinking about putting pontoons on my lawnmower.
|
Stop your whining and go shoot.

Went home cleaned the muzzleloaders and mowed the yard till dark and then it rained saturday. This May has been the 5th wettest on record ever... We will be dry again this fall I'm afraid if the pattern holds like other years. |

I don't feel a need to show them like others do. I only go to a range to sight in a new gun and then practice in the national forest from hunting positions and different angles like i'd experience while hunting.
I do it for me and I find it enjoyable. I don't show pictures of game killed either. Read my signature. ;) |
Muley are you sure that's legal? I don't believe you can do that here in the woods of PA (state forests). That is what is called "shooting at random". I know its definitely illegal during hunting season.
I often commented "That in all the years I've hunted I never even saw a random. I don't even know what one looks like!" |
Yes, it legal here. I've been doing it for decades.
I also have some private property I can and do use half the time. |
One reason I purchased property and made my own shooting range. Today is in the 70's I hope to get out and shoot. Been saving milk jugs for a while to play with. I want to see how a .58 caliber ball goes through them.

I always wanted to find a cabin to live in up in the mountains. I just can't find anything I can rent from someone. That would be ideal to just walk out your door and go hunting/shooting. I only have a mile to go now, but it's not the same.
|
We have had evening thunderstorms so get plenty of time early in the day to shoot. My problem is I spend the early part of the day either at work or coaching baseball on the weekends.
|
I go to our cabin every chance I get. Muley you'd love it. A 15' x 30' cabin basicallyl in the middle of the woods. We're 5 miles in any direction from any civilization except for the dirt road that passes by about 100 or so yards away that gets very little traffic. No elec or running water. Now we have a generator and some lighting but we still use propane lanterns and cook on a propane stove most of the time.
And up until a few years ago we had an outhouse. Today, because of local township rules our "outhouse" is a modern compost toilet instead of a hole in the ground with a seat 4 walls and a roof. Its really a dumb law because when the buckets are full and dried out it is simply compost mixed with peat moss. I believe this law was more of a money maker and not an enviornmental concern because the earth is a natural filter and an outhouse does absolutely no harm. |

Excellent!

That's great Barnes...
Hey Muley that first cabin just needs a bit of sweeping up and it should be just fine!! |
I took the Sharps out today to play with it a bit. The original globe sight was missing the top bar that held the sight insert in place so I ordered a new Pedersoli Tunnel Sight with inserts. Well apparently that sight is higher than the original and it holds the inserts in differently than the original. The rear sight does not have any elevation adjustment but it has a flip up with a sliding sight for different ranges. When its folded down and I use the fixed rear sight I shoot about 6" low at 50 yards. So I tried putting it up and with the sliding sight at its lowest point I shoot about 12" high. I know one solution would be to file down the front post but the that would be the only insert I can use. I'd really like to try the other inserts.
I have an email into Pedersoli to see if they can send me a different rear sight. I did get a tang sight for it and its nice but not the best for hunting. The aperature is only about .045" so it can only be used in good light. |
Last night I was tinkering with the rear sight on the Sharps. The sight consists of a V notch at the bottom of at 2" slide which can flip up and holds another V notch sight that can slide up and down for longer ranges. This is all held onto the barrel via a single screw in the front. The base (rear) of the sight sets in a "cradle" that is dovetailed into the barrel. I loosened the screw and cut a piece of lead shim about 1/16" thick and 3/8" x 1/2" and slid it under the sight and between the ears of the cradle.
Taking it out today I made a really good guess on the shim thickness. At 50 yards the rifle put 3 shots into a clover leaf - all touching and 3" high. That should put me pretty much dead on at 100 yards with the 500 gr bullet I'm using. I'm still waiting for a response from Pedersoli to see what kind of rear sight options have. |
