Thread posted in classified and moved to Black Powder forum.
Think you'll get better and more opinions here. JW |
I had one of the ones that Won all the matches I guess a long time ago. Put it against a original super disc and the super disc won fairly easy so sent the 500 back to were I got it. So my opinion is the Knight 500 is way over priced and a waste of money.

You can buy a Super Disc for $200.00 to $300.00 bucks. Upgrade the bolt and breech plug for less then $200.00. So basicaly for $500.00 to $600.00 bucks you got a great ML and youll have it for a lifetime. Whats a Knight 500 cost?? Close to $2000.00 is what i heard?? You can confirm that. You could even buy a Disc Extreme or an Elite used and have a guy like Bestil rebarrel it and have a fully head spaced breech plug and a smokeless rated plug and barrel for no more then $1000.00. And have a 1/18 or 1/20 twist whatever you prefer. The Ultimate is also a great platform to start with. I saw one for sale the other day for $650.00 used. Have it rebarreled and a good smokeless rated plug head spaced for it and youll have a better rifle then the Knight 500 for far less money. The standard ultimate is just old school technology. Dirty pellets and a non user friendly breech plug. And to be honest, a Knight Mountaineer makes a great bench shooting rifle. Im not a fan of them, but if i was a bench shooter i would for sure. Maybe/probably as good or better then most. Just have the breech plug drilled out for a ventliner or have a Lukes plug installed properly head spaced and youll have all you need. |
I think its cool Knight offered them but in all honesty its not hard to have a better rifle built for $2000. GM even sells the .450x.458 1-18 cut rifling barrel blanks if you wanted one as close to a Knight 500 as possible.
About the only thing you cant get is the Boyds stock WITH the bedding block. You can buy the exact same stock from Boyds but im not aware of any place you can buy that bedding block. Very nice rifle but im a little disappointed they did not retail for closer to $1200 and let you add the additional options you wanted. |

Hear any comments from them ?
The other shoots conicals and real black powder IIRC and he seems very happy with it. If it was mine i would contact Jeff Fisk and get one of his bare primer breach plugs installed. They are custom fit and include a tungsten carbide bushing instead of a vent liner. Some of the original Lehigh 17-4 plugs might also still be available for about half the cost. |

One thing you consider... the 500 and the rifle that Grouse had were never meant to sabots. The twist rate of those two rifle creates a tremendous torque on a sabot and normally with the heavier charges it will not hold up. If you are shooting full bore projectiles that is a completely different story. |
With what few have been sold, it would be wise to talk with those who have them and are shooting them. You'll need to change web sites. Especially since you've already pulled the plug on one. No other rifles need mentioning at this point. Good luck with your new rifle!

Well I plan on using primarily for hunting elk out here and going to use the largest big lead slug it likes I probably won't even shoot it for a while until I can put a Knight force scope on it. The only thing I don't like at this point is it doesn't have the ramrod in the gun so I'll have to see if that's possible without messing up the stock ?
![]() Bull Shop Dan makes others also that you might be more interested in... ![]() The picture says .504 but he will size it to the size your request. Which powder do you plan on using? I shoot them with 90 grains T7 with a shot card under the bullet. They work! |

I would be betting the rifle would shoot the Bull Shop .503x460 without a hick-up. They are really accurate from my 1-24's and will handle elk without a problem.

Good question but right now I'm not sure.can you shoot Bh209 out of them? Really not much information out there on them.I really would like to cast my own to be honest but for now I will probably try some but the bigger the better imo.right now I'm waiting for my 600 gr mold from lbt for my whites it's going to drop a .505 then I will size down to .504 or .5035
I am assuming... the 500 comes with the Lehigh/Knight breech plug which will shoot BH very easily with a regular Win W209 primer. I would make another suggestion also - if the BP is the standard BP I would make a real effort to find a Lehigh breech plug with a removable vent liner or contact Bestill Creations and get one of Jeff's breech plugs that will/can be built to fit your rifle and the primer you choose to use. Also, if you do go to BH you will probably need to use a wad to seal the bore and keep the heat off the bottom of the bullet. BH and T7 will melt the bottom of the bullet. |

Knight 500s come with the FPJ plug as the standard. Not the best choice for BH209 especially if you want to shoot a conical. The true Lehigh plug though should work fine. It does in my SuperDisc with the Bullshops and a veggie wad. You want conicals sized around .001-.002 over land size. Slip fit like a White would be pushing your luck if the shot of a life time was available.
BTW...DONT go over 80gr by volume of BH209 with these big conicals. FPS will get too high and you could run into pressures that are getting kinda high. |

Well I'm not sure I agree you have to figure a good stock like that will cost at least 800 then the hand tuned gm barrel,Timney trigger and all the rest and case it adds up pretty quick.probably about 300 bucks at most over priced.

If the 500 uses the Mountaineer breech plugs, I have RPJ plugs with removable vents from Lehigh. You can have one if you want it no problem.

Grouse is talking about a red plastic jacket plug BUT the vent liner is not braised in like the OEM Knight plug. You can replace just the vent liner when it wears out. Any primer seems to fit fine in the jacket but in mine mags were much dirtier.
Bare primer and a win209 primer is way cleaner. My Bestill bare primer plug can use either the Fed209A or Win209 perfectly. My Lehigh bare primer plugs work best with a Win209 but they can be shimmed to work with others too. Both plugs are made of 17-4 stainless and made by Lehigh so either one is excellent quality. Jeff had 100 or so plugs made a little long so they could be custom fit. You will need either a bare primer bolt or adapter too with the Bestill plug. I prefer the adapter. |

![]() The plug on the left is a DISC breech plug and the one on the right is a Mountaineer plug. You can see the Mnt plug is longer. Both of these are bare 209 plugs. Which ever plug you have or get there is a good chance you may have to shim the plug with SS washer to fit the primer you choose to use. With either plug there is not real need of a Mag primer. The plug is built to possibly fit best with a W209 primer This is a picture of a BP with a shim installed. The shim act as a head spacing device to keep the breech clean ![]() If you need to shim I and other can help you with that. The plug you are going to get with the rifle will likely be a FPJ plug like the one on the left. ![]() That also means you will get a FPJ bolt housing that looks a lot like this. The piece supporting the nose of the bolt is a 'Primer Adapter' and that piece you will need to come up with. There is a guy on the internet that has the adapter and bare breech plug available. ![]() This shows the primer adapter on adapter is a old Knight adapter the other is a Lehigh/Knight ![]() This picture shows the primer adapted installed in a FPJ bolt... With this setup you just drop the primer into the open slot in the adapter. Closing the bolt installs the primer in the BP and opening and pulling back extracts it. ![]() This picture shows the Vent Liner installed in the breech plug. ![]() The other NFPJ Knight bolt (bare primer bolt) assembly originally for the Mountaineer series rifle but now being used in the DISC has primer rails built into the nose of the bolt and you need to slide the primer into the rails... ![]() Hope some of this helps answer some questions.... |

Knight does make a 209 "holder" that makes loading the bare primer bolt easier. I just find the bare primer adapter to work easier without an additional item to carry.
