210g Gold Dot -- 80g Blackhorn

Speer say this Gold Dot bullet is designed to be used for 'personal protection'. A question surfaced as to whether this bullet could be used as a mild recoil hunting load. This morning it was tested by shooting it through a trap consisting of carpet, then plywood, then water jugs, then phone books. The powder charge was 80 grain Blackhorn. The distance to the trap was 25 yard. Five fresh bullets from the box were weighed. Three of them weighed more than 210 grain; two of them weighed less than 210 grain. Recoil was light.

At impact the front jug was blown into 2 pieces. One piece can be seen flying almost all the way to the camera. The other piece flew about 15 feet the opposite direction. The second jug was nearly split in two. Then the bullet bounced off the third jug, and ended up on the snow 2' to the side of the horse, and slightly forward. The opened bullet weighs 209.7 grain.

Doubt one would get a pass through (on a shoulder hit) but it sure seems like it would make one hell of a mess of a shoulder and the internals!

I'd hate to shoot a deer with one of those at 25 yds. I'd be afraid blood would splash back on me...lol

That is one heck of a defensive bullet. Looks really good at close range. I wonder how it would function a bit further out?
I agree it would make soup out of an animal's vitals.

Further out the bullet will expand less, have more shank, and penetrate deeper.
