T/C Pro Hunter Design/Build
I'm buying a new muzzleloader. Moving up from a CVA Optima.
Unless you folks convince me otherwise, I'm leaning towards the T/C Encore Pro Hunter frame with either a T/C or a custom 209 x 50 barrel. I like the fit of that style frame. Does anyone have any experience with custom barrels made for the T/C? Bullberry barrels? How about replacing the 209 breech plug to accept brass? The gun will mainly be used for hunting. I plan to keep this one for life. So, I want a quality firearm that out shoots me without spending more than $1,500.00. |
I've had a pile of Encore platform rifles, all with the factory barrels. Every one of them shot outstanding. I will admit that did about $35.00 worth of frame changes to each rifle. Very easy rifle frame to work on. I have 200yd targets of 3/4" groups, using 107grs VOLUME of BH209, ignited by CCI209M primers and sending 250gr Barnes TMZ bullets. I like the Encore platform more than any other break open.
However........... I'd suggest you take a real close look at Knight rifles. Some prefer the Ultra-Lite over the Mountaineer but, either of these rifles would be my choice over ANY break open rifle. The bare primer option would be the way I'd go. Knight has come out with a fast twist .45cal, more expensive but, for my type shooting it would be my choice. Good luck. |
Roger, if you want a good .50cal then you are on the right track with the TC platform. I have the Pro Hunter system with several CF barrels and a .50cal ML barrel. Also a 12gu slugger. I personally am under an inch at 100 in 5 shot groups with each and every barrel for that rig. Like Barnes Addict, I did Mike Bellm's accurizing system. It was a little uncalled for as the rig shot great before hand. BUT it shot even better after I did the work. You really don't need to go the custom route unless you want a .45. One bad thing about the .50cal barrels is, it will be a crap shoot as to weather or not you will be able to shoot connical bullets. That QLA crap on the end of the barrels is junk. It's also junk that I removed post haste! Cut it off and crowned it.

Great advice. Thank you. If you have any input, please keep them coming.
