New Project In My Brain!!

Well, I am officially fully retired and I told the boys and girl that they are on their own with the buiss!! So that means lots of time to pester the wife and look for things to do with my time!!! Since pestering the wife can reach dangerous levels, I'm choosing the finding things to do with my time!! (she's little but mean!!) I've got an idea in my brain for a fast twist .50!!! 1:20 to handle long big full bore bad boys! Thinking about having one made for the TC frame rather than buying an Ultra or some such. I THINK Pac-nor can do that. May just have to have the barrel made and then fitted by TC or some such. Don't know the details yet as this really just popped into my tiny little mind. I want a barrel that is rated for smokeless since it's going on my TC frame but will probably rarely, if ever use smokeless. Just having that option for giggles! SO,, who on here has had this same idea and followed through with this absurd notion and tell me if I am on the right track or 100% demented?? I am basically wanting a beast to reach out and put the hammer of Thor on any animal walking this planet out to 250-300 yards. What say ye!!

That sounds like an interesting project. Good luck with your retirement.

I really would not go to a 1-20 although i have heard of a couple 50cal 1-20s on Rem or Savage actions. A 50cal 1-24 will stabilize a 600gr conical. That load will be very rough on the shoulder in the lighter Encore. IIRC Pacnor does offer a 50cal 1-20 as well as Douglas and McGowen. Match Grade Machine can build it for you. They are currently making some nice 45 Encore barrels using Brux but im told if they can get the blank then they can build it. Brux can pretty much make any twist since they are cut rifled.

White rifle settled on the 1-24 for 50cals and they shoot big lead remarkably well.

We already know that you're 100% demented, so this idea should fall right in line with that, LOL! :busted::)

Maybe this will help clear his head.

A custom MGM Brux barrel will run you around $900 for the Encore.

A Bullberry will run you about $660 and i think that is for a smoker Green Mountain 1-28 barrel so add in who knows how much additional $$$$ for a Pacnor 1-20

SMI is the cheapest at $400 using a Douglas barrel but 1-36 is the standard twist and there have been quite a few negative reviews in the last couple years related to customer service and communication. Longer than promised wait times will only be worse with a custom order barrel such as a 1-20.

Right now you can buy a 45cal 1-20 Brux for Encore that will handle smokeless for under $900. It has no problem hitting 2500fps with a 275gr bullet. I know of 2 vendors that have them ready to ship with tungsten carbide bushings in the breach plug. One even offers a LRMP ignition system instead of a 209. These barrels will easily handle a 45cal 500gr conical and probably a little larger. You could easily order one in 1-18 and wait a little longer.

Not thinking connies GM, I'm thinking more along the lines of a .50 BMG bullet. PacNor makes their ML .50 1:20 in .510. .505 would give me the weight range I am wanting (in the 500gr range) but the .510 (.50 BMG) is limited to between 600-750 range. Unless I decide to custom lathe and size my own copper solids. A 1:24 twist wouldn't stabilize the length I am thinking. At BP muzzleloader speeds, a 1:20 would be fine but if I DID decide to pump up the volume and go smokeless then I'm not so sure 1:20 would cut it. 1:18 would be saaaaaaaaaweet! And yeah I know this is going to be a real shoulder buster. Don't forget, I own a few .500NE and BPE guns. I am very well versed in Mule kicking rifles unfortunately.

According to their little price calculator on PacNor, $525 for everything (if they do it for a TC Encore platform, shot them an email asking if they even fit up for TC) so yeah I know it's not gonna be cheap.

Here is the main problem for shooting BMG type bullets. An Encore barrel is 1.0" OD. To get a bullet of that type obturate into the rifling you will need a REALLY stout load of powder. You could certainly full form the bullets( pre engrave the rifling in a die) but you will still have some crazy high pressures for a 1"OD barrel with a .510 groove.

A Rem action can support upto a 1.2"+ barrel OD and yes a 50cal BMG type ML has been done. I cant remember what action was used though. It could have even been a Savage slug gun action. I cant remember.
