Is this the type of polishing compound to use? Perhaps work it around the plug using a pipe cleaner?

.... or would this one be better?

Ive used this and a similar stick product.

Both reds are "final" buffing compounds for SS so they don't remove much metal. Rougher SS will require the white or blue stick compound.

I just polished the primer pocket of a Lehigh plug and one from Knight with 2000 grit and JB bore paste spun on a drill bit. The Lehigh plug didn't really "need" it but the W209 primers slip in and out easier now. I pulled randomly out of two boxes of W209 primers and some go in very easy and some a little harder but all of them will work great.
Polishing the knight plug made no difference with any W209 primer. The primers have to be pressed in pretty hard and have to be pulled out with a tool. The last time I used this plug at the range I had a primer get stuck in the breechplug and could not be pulled out with the bolt normally. It definitely needs to be opened up more. Hopefully, Lehigh will start making plugs again or Knight gets their stuff straightened out.

I had a Savage plug that took me over an hour to get a Win209 to fit correctly. They seem to ship them on the tight side but this one was crazy tight. I could have done it faster with a Dremel bit but i used rolled up emery cloth by hand.

I have a pair of very small needle nose pliers I am sure would get in there, they were used to put TV tubes together when they still had tubes. I use them to open pistachio nuts by sticking the needle nose in the crack where the two halves come together on a nut with narrow opening and open the pliers. Works like a charm and no sore fingers.

When the primer is fired it swells slightly in the bolt face or NFPJ adapter. The is very little clearance between the primer and bolt or adapter even unfired.
The most clearance is at the front of the primer. If you can hook something like a dental pic IN the fired primer, you might be able to pull the primer out.
