Default Switching bullets have question

I am switching bullets from the Knight packaged 260gr. jacketed bullets. I want to go to the Hornady XTP 300gr. which has a diameter of .452 using 100gr. of pyrodex pellets. I just use the rifle for deer at ranges no greater than 100yds, most shot about half that. Just want to know what the recommended sabot is for use in my Knight Wolverine (LK93) stainless barrel?

Thanks Jim

That's a hard question to answer. Muzzleloader bore size differs even between the same model. If the Knight bullets loaded with moderate pressure you could try Harvester black sabots (50 cal/.452" bullet). If you present bullets were difficult to load you could use the Harvester Crush Rib sabot also in black. These are the ones that I use in my .50s and they work well. MPM also makes a variety of sabots for that bullet but not having used them I cannot comment.

I agree. You'll have to see what your gun likes. Sometimes it's more than what fits. It's what shoots the best.

I would try a MMP HPH-12 or MMP HPH-24 when using a 300gr XTP in a Knight. The HPH-12 will be better in larger bores. The HPH-24 in tighter bores. You could also use a Harvester Smooth Black (EZ-Load) in place of the HPH-24. I prefer the shorter Harvester EZ-Load which is labeled (for upto 300gr bullets) when im using Harvester sabots.

Older Knights often run from .501-.502 so my best guess is the HPH-12.

My Knight Vision and 300 XTPs in .452 load with a little resistance, wrapped by a Harvester Crushed Rib sabot.

Anyone, Should I consider a lighter bullet than the 300 gr. I keep seeing conflicting info as I research these bullets. As I said, I just want to shoot deer at fairly close range with pass thru. I am presently using the now unavailable 260 jacket Knight bullets with great success. Thanks

A 250gr is plenty for deer. Especially, at your ranges.

A 300gr can be used, but most of the energy will be wasted. It's a better elk round.

In your other post, flounder and sabotloader offered to send you some of the 260's super cheap. Personally, I feel they are fantastic bullets and they work great...and it sounds like you have had good success with them as well. I'd take them up on their offer and you will be good to go! Don't have to change a thing.

Re: other bullets, sure...there are plenty of good options. If I was using an XTP, it would be of similar size to what you are now. I don't feel like you'll gain anything, they are similar.

If you can find any 240gr or 300gr Deep Curls anyhwhere...grab em up. They are amazing, imo the best cup/core bullet in that design/size. If you want higher tech bullets that perform superbly, look at the 250gr Knight Bloodlines. Many folks like the Barnes 250 & 290 also... so you have alot of quality options should you decide to change. There are plenty more I didn't list, but at the end of the day... what you are using now will put em down every time at the ranges you hunt, in my experience.

Another option is the Harvester PT Gold in 260gr. If you buy in bulk (50) they cost $.50 ea with crush rib sabots. They'll kill any deer on earth.

Thanks WVHunter, I did get the bullets from Flounder 32 of them or they are on their way. I was trying to get enough bullets (260 Knights) to keep my brother happy. He is a pain in the ass with his muzzleloader and very resistant to any sort of change. I on the other hand am willing to change to allow him to continue shooting what we have been shooting for years. That is where I'm coming from. I did not see a post from Sabatloader offering bullets. Thanks for the input.
