Default JHP Vs. Pointed Bullets

Does anyone know how much difference putting a plastic tip on a bullet makes in velocity & trajectory over the same bullet with an open hollow point? Is the difference important at muzzleloader ranges, say 200 yds. max.? Thanks.

No reason for pointy bullets in inside 200 yards that's for sure!!

I have to agree. I'd say minimal difference. The pointy bullets may shoot a little better groups but it will be negligible when taking game.

Hunt the bullet you like.

Alright then. I don't shoot much and certainly don't shoot at a deer when it is over 200 yds. away. Most of my shots will be under 100 yds. so I will stay with the cheaper choice, the JHP. On deer I use a scoped CVA Optima with 100 to 120 grains T7 and usually a 230 to 250 grain saboted bullet. No more high dollar SST's and such. Thanks.

Actually SOME of the tipped bullets have another purpose for that tip. At lower velocities, such as a longer range impact, those poly tips are designed to insert into the hollow and start the expansion of the bullet. The SST's are one such design. Not all of them are just for better ballistic coefficients.

Last summer we began our bullet testing using 50g of powder at 25 yard. Quickly we discovered that most bullets failed to work. This had us change to using 80g of powder so that bullets would perform as they were designed to. Most all bullets tested, worked when pushed by 80g of powder. Most all bullets tested, failed when only pushed by 50g of powder. The tipped bullets failed, just like the hollow point bullets failed, just like the soft point bullets failed.

There didn't seem to be any advantage to the tipped bullets at low speeds.

Interestingly, we found all the fracturing bullets worked very well at all speeds.

Only one tipped bullet worked at 25 yard, when pushed by only 50g of powder.

I would agree with Grouse and Josmund, for all practical purposes there is not a real benefit to a pointy bullet when shooting to 200.

Bullets with the larger meplat traveling at a ML velocities will make the impression you want. I would just make sure you are shooting a bullet that will stay together. If you a shooting a pistol bullet in a sabot you could have some problems with that.

This bullet will give you what you what for the range under 200.
