Oops, I did it again!

(NOTE: The above picture was edited/updated 10/13/15 with latest information on the gun.)

Dat's a real purdy piece der Semi! Pretty fast twist though don't you think? Can't wait to see some reports.
I did the same thing but....
I got a NIB CVA Optima V2 at an auction this weekend. Blue w/black synthetic stock & fiber optic sights. I got it for a song @ $138. My cousin dropped by and fell in love with it. He laid 7 $20 bills on the table and said I want it. Since I have an Accura V2 and don't really need it I said OK. Its pretty bad when you buy a new gun and don't even get to shoot it!!!

Beautiful gun. I would love to have one like it but I can't see iron sights anymore.

Semisane 10-11-2015 03:11 PM

Hatfield made caliber specific round ball twists for their guns; 1:32 for 36 caliber, 1:48 for 45 caliber, and 1:70 for 50 caliber. We'll see how it does. Might even try some sabots with .40 XTPs and some of Ed's 350's just for kicks.

Got the same problem. If I keep this one there might be a peep in its future.

Slowburn 10-11-2015 03:44 PM

Semi, that's a good looking rifle. I love those classic lines of that rifle and that's a mighty purdy stock on that thing. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do mine.

idahoron 10-11-2015 04:40 PM

Real good looking rifle.

Semisane

Everybody has already said it - but man that is a beautiful gun!

Now that was funny I don't care who ya are :D (ifn ya don't git tha joke then ya aint country)

MountainDevil54 10-11-2015 07:39 PM

Very good guns. They still make them under the cabelas blue ridge name. They used to call them USA made guns but then they got busted removing the italian markings on the barrel after some time lol. With the GM barrel, that should be the earlier hatfield.

bronko22000 10-11-2015 08:08 PM

Darn you Semi. Now you have me wanting to take a trip to Fort Chambers muzzleloading shop and grab me a custom .54 flinter round ball shooter. He has one there for only $1100. Gulp...that even hurt to type.

Semisane 10-11-2015 08:18 PM

It pains me to read it. I'd be ashamed to tell you what I paid for the Hatfield.

That's a very nice rifle Semi. I remember back in the 80's when they were available and I wanted one but never pulled the trigger.

Jon...

Do you have any proof of that? If so, please enlighten us with links to your investigative research.

BTW... I have a Cabela's Blue Ridge rifle (by Pedersoli) and it's not a patch off some of the Hatfields that I've seen and handled.

Semisane 10-12-2015 09:29 AM

Jon is right Blackpowdersmoke. The later Hatfield company did have guns made by Pedersoli and got caught removing the Pedersoli name from them.

I pulled the barrel to check the underside and, as it turns out, it is a Pedersoli made gun. Here's what I found.

Now that doesn't bother me at all. I have a very nice Pedersoli with beautiful wood, a pristine bore and a great sparking lock. I expect it to shoot quite well.

MountainDevil54 10-12-2015 09:33 AM

thank goodness i dont have to go through and find that info again! LOL.

Still a great and good looking rifle regardless.

super_hunt54 10-12-2015 10:31 AM

Now isn't that just about as stupid a thing to do as can be? Filing out the Pedersoli name but leaving the ITALIAN proof house marks on there? Sheesh, anyone that knows anything about firearms knows proof house marks and can see those are Italian PH's so that barrel is OBVIOUSLY not American made. At least I don't think any American barrel makers send their barrels to Italy for proofing :D

Semi...

A later Hatfield Company??.... So was there an earlier Hatfield Company whose guns were American made as I was always lead to believe? Why does yours have an L&R lock and not a Pedersoli lock or is that not so as was the supposed GM barrel which is Pedersoli?

BPS

super_hunt54 10-12-2015 11:59 AM

So I'm assuming you didn't get the rifle you thought you got? Since that isn't a green mountain barrel? Wouldn't a Pedersoli barrel actually be worth more? I'm not as familiar as I SHOULD be with the GM vs Pedersoli values.

Slowburn 10-12-2015 12:18 PM

I have a .36 frontier from Pedersoli and I love it. It shoots great and is very reliable in igniting the charge. It seems to have a fairly quick lock time and I love to carry it hunting. I know you will really enjoy it. I must admit that yours has a far purdier stock than mine does. My is just a plain walnut stock but I love the way she feels. Good luck and enjoy...

BPS, regarding the "L&R Lock" tag on the picture in my original post. That has proved to be incorrect. It's a Pedersoli lock.

When I labeled the original picture I was going by research that said Hatfield used GM barrels and L&R locks. Well, that was true for the original maker, Ted Hatfield. He built them in St. Joseph, Missouri and the gun was supposedly a copy of rifles built by his great-great-grandfather, Moses Hatfield. It seems that somewhere along the way Hatfield sold the name/design to a group that became the "Hatfield" company, and at one point that company contracted production out to Pedersoli. They built the "Hatfield" guns with all Pedersoli manufactured parts, except for the American tiger striped maple wood used for the stocks.

Anyway, here's a corrected picture.

MountainDevil54 10-12-2015 12:58 PM

I believe their slogan at the time was "Uniquely" American Made. I'll have to check through some old magazines I have and see what I can come up with.

They were speaking of the stock :)

Semisane 10-12-2015 03:06 PM

Well, what's more uniquely American than a bit of slight of hand by a corporation? :o

cayugad 10-12-2015 03:50 PM

Well I don't care who built it or where the parts come from... I really like the rifle. If you ever decide you don't like it, call me ... we can talk.:)

Blackpowdersmoke 10-13-2015 08:21 AM

Semi...

I have a copy of Fjestad's "Blue book of Modern black Powder Values" from 2002. He stated that the guns were previously manufactured by Mountain River Rifle Works and then by Hatfield Gun Co. Inc. until 1996

The MSR at that time for the Squirrel rifle you have was $600...

Add $20 for flintlock
Add $65 for extra fancy maple grade II and $175 for hand selected grade III
Custom models could run 200% over standard

Maybe this will give you some idea of what you're rifle is worth.

BPS

Semisane 10-13-2015 01:39 PM

Thanks BPS. I'd already figured if I decide to sell it (unlikely) I'll tag it at around $700.

rafsob 10-16-2015 07:54 AM
