58cal hits water jug with authority!
Sighted in my 58cal CVA Hawken yesterday, I decided to play with a water jug and make a splash. Got more than I expect from that powerful, hard hitting .570" round ball! That's a seasoned 2x6 the water jug is sitting on top of!
110gr Pyrodex Select 50 yards |
OMG! You hit that thing dead-nuts and looking at the 3rd replay in slo-mo, that jug probably went 10-12 ft in the air.
|
and straight up! I wish I had the camera zoomed out a bit more.
|
You're all set for your water jug hunt. :p
|
I was contemplating taking my .58 for bear this year. I shoot a .575 ball and 100 gr of Goex FFg. Not much difference. This video makes me want to even more. That should be some potent bar medicine.
|
I've shot only one deer with my .58. Mid-chest pass through at 75 yards or so, with a massive blood trail. Didn't really need the blood trail for the six foot tracking job.
|
Years ago I was hunting with my friend. He carried a CVA Mountain Rifle in .58 caliber. I watched him take a bead on a nice fat doe that was playing hide and seek around a tree with him. He touched that cannon off and hit her, square in the face. It spun that deer around and wrapped her right around the tree she was using for a shield. Needless to say we did not put the drag rope around her neck when we pulled her out.
That 58 has impressive power. I hunted bear with only a .54 caliber and round ball. The only thing that worried me was when a mother bear and two large cubs came in. I knew I was out numbered. But never felt out gunned. |

Mmmmmmm, I bet that was a sweet smelling gutting job? :eek2:
Do you guys eat the liver? |
Do I eat the liver? No I leave the guts in the woods. I have tried it to be honest and did not like it. A friend once cooked the heart for us and while it was good, I preferred the back straps much more. He loves heart and always says we should keep all of them. He pickles them and then slices them for lunch meat.

Nice! You should set up a test like Ron does, just to see how that big ol round ball shakes out.
I had a chance one time to get a Big Boar at a very fair price...should have done it. One of the few deals I wish I had a chance to "do over". At least I have my .54 renegade. |

to heck with a water jug test, I shot a doe last year in the chest and the ball only lot a few grains of weight and expanded greatly, but not even close to coming apart. We found the ball in her rear leg after it cracked the leg bone.
|
LOL gotta love using deer as cannon fodder :)

well after hunting season i sure can give that a try and see what happens. Got a busy season this year with multiple projects going on that need to be finished before the cold season hits.

LOL yeah you got to watch those. Some folks just post on here for a response and nothing more. Muley and I were talking about this topic the other day.

As a matter of fact, there aren't enough of you guys posting on this subject. It's in the Northeast section so it's not getting the traffic that the actual subject deserves. If you guys wouldn't mind, pop in, read all the pages (10 or 11) of the back and forth arguments and post YOUR feelings on the subject matter. BUT, don't get suckered into name calling and such like my fool rear did. A couple of the people posting on that one will do their very best to irk you. Here's the link and enjoy the laughs. There are several :) http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/nort...nt-ban-pa.html

Can you imagine owning a 58-cal inline with a twist between 1:60 and 1:70?..... shooting patched roundballs and Blackhorn?
I have a T/C Firehawk .58 inline (1:38) with a 3x9 scope mounted on it that I shoot patched round balls through. I have tried Pyrodex RS, Triple 7 FFg and Goex FFg black and it prefers the taste of Goex the best. I shot a doe with it some years back. She came through on a trail about 50 yd. above where I had placed my climber and stopped broadside so I poked a .570 rb through her lungs. She spun around and ran about 35-40 yds. and flopped. I later found some lung matter on the tree behind where she stood when I squeezed off the shot! I don't hunt with it anymore because I'm just not into inlines but maybe I should get it out and play with it again for grins. Tried .58 Maxi's in it once and only once... too d@mn punishing to shoot! I also have a T/C .58 Hawken I bought two years ago that's never been fired. BPS |
I had the h&r with the .58cal and slow twist. Darn neat rifle! I sold it before I could have fun with it. It was darn near mint inside and out.
|
I wish someone would make a CVA, T/C or Knight inline with 1:60/70 twist in 54 or 58-cal. Notice I don't mention custom manufacturer" for I want the price to be under 6-7 bills for black/blued.
|
T7 you can buddy. Bob Hoyt can take a barrel and give you what ever caliber and twist you want as long as theres enough meat on the bone. I think he charges under $150.

I still don't understand why T/C went with a 1:38 twist in that .58 Firestorm rifle... they could have made those barrels with a slow twist, but it does shoot a good group with patched round balls. It has a simple striker design with #11 ignition and it never failed during any of my shooting sessions with it. The only downfall is that it doesn't have a removable breech plug and has to be flushed if you really want to make sure it's thoroughly clean. I usually swabbed the bore good then plugged the #11 nipple and poured in some good BP cleaner like Butch's and let that stand for awhile at the breech then used a flushing nipple afterward with so I didn't have to remove the scope etc. BPS |
I might look into that soon. Thanks Jon.

Forgot, but the 27th of Sept i'll be in new mexico with this hawken. I almost got her dialed in where i need it, so hopefully i can lay a buck down with her finally!

You should find a Knight MK-85 .50 cal in excellent condition, then have the bore reamed to what you want. You'd probably have $400 total in it. |
