Pig Reports

For some reason, last year we had very few hogs at the hunting lease. Very little sign, only two sightings and one kill. We thought our hog troubles were over.

I just got a call from the guy who handles our lease. His mail man reported a sounder of 20+ adult hogs crossing the highway and entering our woods. And a woman who works in his office and who lives just North of our lease said she saw a sow with eight little piggies doing the same thing.

Our primitive arms/gun season doesn't open until Nov. 14th. But I thing the Swamp Dragon will be looking to feed on some pork as soon as the heat lets up a bit.

Semi, want me to see if the fellas are about done in Texas and send them your way? If so, find out if there is somewhere close that Thomas can get some ammo for my .458. I'm sure he is getting low since I only sent around around 100 rounds with him.

bronko22000 08-13-2015 10:17 AM

Semi if you need some assistance eradicating those hogs I can pack up all my muzzies and come pay you a visit.

I wish I could accommodate you guys. But our club does not allow non-member guest hunters except for youngsters up to 16 years old.

The property can't stand much more hunter pressure than the members put on it. The "no guest" rule was implemented years ago and has prevented a lot of the discontent and bitching we see in surrounding clubs.

LMAO, weren't thinking of me or my guy's there Semi, was thinking about your all's property there bud! It's what we do! Never charge a fee. We do it for the meat for the Hunters Feeding The Hungry program. How you think I've killed so many hogs? We go through the property and kill every one we see. Your club would be thankful I would imagine. Hog sounders on a property= less deer and tons of property damage.
Question though, It's been since 2010 since I ran hogs in Louisiana, is it still illegal to crack on them at night there? Bone stupid rule there if it is. In the heat that state has in the summer, fall months it would be dang near impossible to get a crack on them in the day time.

You can hunt them at night from March to August. No night hunting September through February.

I know hogs do alot of damage, but I wish we had some where I hunt....just so I could get me some bacon each season :D

They are drifting north and east...I'd imagine in my lifetime they will be prevalent around here, then I'll probably be complaining that I wish we didn't have em.

Good luck Semi, hope the dragon gets to eat!

edmehlig 08-13-2015 01:40 PM

Van, don't forget those 465gr slugs will do a great job on those hogs as well. LOL

MountainDevil54 08-13-2015 01:49 PM

yeah you need to do more shooting with that one, I liked that one a lot.

Oldtimr 08-13-2015 02:18 PM

WV hunter, that is a very poor wish, the last thing you want is wild hogs in your state and to want them just do you can hunt them is pretty selfish and unthinking. Anyone who wants to have an animal that destroys habitat, eats fawns and destroys turkey and grouse nests and eats baby rabbits and other wildlife really has not engaged their thinking process. Have you ever seen the damage hogs to to the land? I suspect not. If you want to hunt hogs, go to where they are.

cayugad 08-13-2015 02:36 PM

While the hogs are a problem, the fact you can hunt them is a plus. Good way to
"test bullet performance." It sure beats bottles of water. Good luck Swamp Dragon. I hope you get a chance to roar!

I never did get around to fitting the .45 caliber barrel that I bought back in 2012 to the Dragon. I need to do that soon. I expect it will do well with the 465's.

MountainDevil54 08-13-2015 05:08 PM

No, you need more practice and deer with that .58cal round ball barrel :D

lastoftheloaners 08-14-2015 12:06 PM

Not really. All the southern states are either badly infested or nearing badly infested and in the mid southwest and west they are proliferating towards the north by a scary margin. They are extremely adaptable and can survive the colder winters up in the lower 48 climate. The ones with stronger Russian bloodlines are VERY adaptable to colder climates. The ones with more of the Spanish bloodlines are the ones most commonly seen in the southern regions and they don't like the colder climates much at all but like all other hog breeds they have a strong tendency to adaptation.

You have to use the Back To The Future key on your computer to return to 2012 before you click on Buy Now. I doubt we'll ever see deals like that again.

I bought a .50 and a .45 barrel (the one in the picture) and they sent me a second .45 barrel free. The one I bought was perfect.

The one they sent free was a fluted barrel that had had front sight, rear sight, and thimble holes drilled that were badly misaligned with the flutes. Here's that one.

Here's the fix I came up with for those holes. I had a coil of silver solder that was about the same diameter as the holes. I pushed the wire into the hole and cut it off, leaving a stub of about 1/16" sticking out above the hole. I then began tapping the stub with the bottom of a teaspoon, expanding the solder, then cut it flush with the barrel with a razor blade. It worked out pretty well.

I wish I had one of those "back to the future" buttons. there'd be a lot more stuff I would be purchasing than muzzy barrels.
I remember when Colt came out with the Python and the guy at the sports counter said "Who the h**l is going to pay $125.00 for a revolver?" Geez - if we only knew back then what we know now.

I had several old catalogs from Dixie Gun Work's early days. Had to throw those suckers away because of how they made me feel every time I looked through them. :s2:
