40 Caliber 200 Grain XTP
 

Scott sent three of these bullet to test. Shot them through carpet, shelving, and into water jugs. Powder was 80g Blackhorn. Range was 25 yard.










The bullet shredded the first jug, went through the second jug leaving small pieces of lead, and was found in the third jug. The third jug contained most of the jacket, and most of the lead. A small piece of the jacket was found on the ground in front of the horse. The sum weight of all the found parts is 162.5 grain. The last two jugs were intact, and can be used for another test.

eeek! The SST is a better choice.

I'll bet the 180 would hold up a wee-bit better at 25 yards. Hornady rates it to hold up better to that speed than the 200.

Its interesting to see the bullet comparisons on basically the same media. Very few people recommend the 200gr XTP for deer hunting unless the load is greatly reduced.

I only use them for shooting paper and the occasional jug, melon or pumpkin.

That may be do to the limitations of the 10mm. You simply cant shoot them as fast as a 180gr without excessive pressure.

Even so, it penetrated deeper than the hollow point powerbelt.

I've shot two does with the .40/200 XTP. I have no complaints regarding performance and would not hesitate to use them again. The load in both cases was 85 grains GOEX FFFg.

One was a 65 yard mid-chest shot. The bullet destroyed both lungs and the top of the heart and exited the off side, blowing blood and chunks of lung several feet behind her. She ran a good ways (some do that) with little blood trail due to the shot being a bit high in the chest. My fault, not the bullet's.

The other was an 85 yard neck shot, just below the ear. Of course, she dropped like a rock and didn't even twitch with a two inch diameter hole completely through the neck and spine.

I also sent some 180gr GoldDots and the Nosler 200gr which i do like better than the 200gr XTP. Im not sure if it holds up any better.

At one time i found a company that made a plated 220gr but it was a TMJ flat point. I had no luck trying to get them to make a 220gr plated HP. Only Hawks makes a larger cup and core 40cal and they are not cheap.

I had good luck with 200grn XTP'S on Deer as well.

Wolfer on another forum has used them for many deer harvests. IIRC he down loads his SML to around 1800fps and sticks to good shot angles.
