230Grain Gold Dot--Rifle Speed

This past May the 230g self defense Gold Dot pistol bullet was given a try out of a rifle. The load was 80g; the bullet was shot into water jugs out 25 yards.

No recording was made because of not wanting to have the camera out in the snow. The 230g Gold Dot on the left was shot from the 45 acp pistol. The 230g Gold Dot on the right was shot from the Dream Season.

The Gold Dot shot from the 45 weighs 229.9g. The bullet shot from the rifle weighs 93.2g. The bullet from the 45 impacted the jugs at about 900fps. The bullet from the rifle impacted at about 1550 fps.

To illustrate the difference between a Deep Curl, and a Gold Dot, the next photo shows a 270g Deep Curl along with the Gold Dots. The Deep Curl was probably traveling at around 1650 fps at impact, because of being pushed by 90g of Blackhorn.

Thanks. I have a 100-pk of G.D. 230s and 180s from 10-11 years ago. My impact using 90 grains of powder would probably be somewhere between 1000 and 1500, obviously depending on distance. I do not adhere to magnum powder loads anymore.

I may donate the 180s to my local Police Department. My XTP 180s also.

Well that flattens them from a rifle.

Triple Se7en 07-28-2015 03:11 PM

My pine tree-trunk testing in October will probably flatten them even more. :lolabove:

I couldn't find anything but small, minute fragments using XTP 180s on pine last November. My 270 gr Buffalo Ballet made a beautiful sticking mushroom.

Lead is a wonderful thing, when not pushed hard.

Speaking of pancakes. When are you going to do the Powerbelt Ron?

The Aerolite is suppose to expand easily. The Platinum is suppose to hold together the best. Maybe you could see if that's true?

Geez Pete, They would cost $29.66, and there would be 13 of them left....

Muley Hunter 07-28-2015 06:01 PM

I have some Aerolites I can send you. No Platinums.

ronlaughlin 07-28-2015 07:03 PM

Leroy sent me these. They weigh 252g each. Are they OK?

Muley Hunter 07-28-2015 07:13 PM

Those are sort of between the Aerolite, and Platinum. See how they do.

Ive got some of the 45cal 300gr Plats. Its probably one of the better PBs but i still wouldn't call them good.

That 230gr GD is just pitiful at that impact speed.
