1/24 Twist - Lehigh 40x215 at the Farm
 

Well I had time this morning to run to the farm to get a little bit more shooting. This morning's shoot was good and not so good!

The plan was to shoot these new Lehigh 40x215 in a 1/24 twist rifle. We/I have shot this bullet in other slow twist rifles and achieved very good accuracy but have been plagued by the little bit of bullet yaw indicating the bullet is not completely stabilized. Dave explained to me what the bullet was doing with a little activity involving your elbow to forearm.

This new bullet with the highest BC (0.330) of any ML bullet that Lehigh has made is really an extremely desirable bullet if you own a fast twist rifle. Today's shoot was to see if a 1-24 would complete the stabilization and I believe it did. I shot a 110 grain load this morning down from my normal 120 gr. hunting and those of you shooting BH that shoot even higher loads would really reap the benefits. This mornings plan was to shoot 6 of the 'golden super 40's' - 3 with the MMP 40x50 Blue Sabot and 3 with a Harvester. We/I have found out from all these shootings a tight fitting sabot is a must in the slower twists. If it were possible I would even want a slightly tighter fit than I got this morning with the MMP. In that I believe if I were shooting in Temps that I normally do the barrel would be tighter the sabot would be a bit harder - everything would improve.

I did try the bullet in a Harvester but all I had were CR sabot. When I loaded the first one I knew right away they were to loose - but no turning back so I shot it - this bullet and the second one I tried never even made the target. Just to loose!

that's good info for the White and other 1:24 twist 50 cal shooters.

IF they can find a sabot that is tight enough! although you could also knurl the bullet a little to increase diameter.

the dark blue I robbed off the shockwaves was plenty tight in my 50 cal mountaineer.

Yes, but White bores are mostly 504-505. In some Whites the dark blue might be to loose but you never know till you shoot it.

It sure shot nice in the 1/24 I used, and it was not even my hunting load - I probably should return tomorrow and shoot some 90/100 grain loads or maybe even some BH loads.
