Received my shipment today. I originally ordered 100 .451 Gold Dots and received 100 .452 Deep Curls in 250 gr. These are different than my 230 gr. Gold Dots from 10 years ago. The HP is noticeably wider and these are banded.

Was thinking I was going to receive self defense bullets, instead getting tougher looking hunting bullets. I am ecstatic to get these magnum bullets at 33 cents apiece. Next comes my range work and my pine tree trunk test. I'll bet these won't disintegrate on impact.

Suddenly, my November/December hunting bullet lineup for my two MLs has changed.

.452 Speer Deep Curls 250 gr.
.451 Barnes XPB 250 gr.

(Backup)
50/40 Precision Elite Extreme 260 gr.
.451 Buffalo S.S.B 285 gr.

I'm putting my 185 gr. Precision Polymer Tips and Hornady SST 200 gr. at the back of the bus for now.

250gr GoldDot and 250gr DeepCurl are the same beasty. Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent.

Neither one was ever intended for use in 45ACP which is .451 The last 250gr DeepCurl/GoldDot i measured came out to slightly over .452.

My memory aint what it used to be but I seem to remember loading up a bunch of the 250gr Gold dots for my .45 LC (Just Colt nowadays for you youngins out there) and DAYUMN did they put the hammer of Thor on some hogs! I haven't looked for the data sheet but I have a slight glimmer of a memory that I loaded them to around 1380fps using around 26 grains H110. It made for some really nice up close and personal in the bush loads for hogs! Never used them in the ML though.

So there's three different models of Gold Dots./Deep Curls? These are not the same as my 230 grain. They are much tougher. So if the 300s are tougher than my just arrived 250s, then three variations exist.

T7, there is no difference in GD or DC. Just the name. What you got is what blew up on my test. I still have no answer as to why, but all the test shots blew up all the same, across two weights. That big deep HP was the culprit. Now will it do that on deer? IDK. I hope they work out well for you. If you bump into some 240's, I'd pick them up for a hunting round, and use the 250's for target. Thats just me.

Personally, I would use the Barnes you listed over the 250 DC/GD...for a hunting round.

I see they are listed for the 45 Colt. Darn it! I got excited when the writing said Deep Curl. Got excited when it said .452. Got excited when it said "hunting bullet". Got excited when I saw the cannelure.

I'll see how they fare on my pine tree-trunk testing in November.

As has been said, no diff between DeepCurl and Gold dot. Just pay attention to the caliber/weight. For example, the 45cal. (.452)/250gr DeepCurl/Gold Dot is, and always has been, a bullet for the .45cal Long Colt. It is NOT a magnum bullet. That is why, IMO, it has such a deep hollow point and why, at ML speeds it has the potential to over-expand and/or break up like WV Hunter noted. It nonetheless is a successful deer killer. I prefer the .44cal (.429) 240gr bullet (designed for .44 magnum) or the .45cal (.452) 300gr bullet (designed for the .454 Casull) with their more shallow hollow point.

I just feel more confident that they will hold together and fully expand. But good luck finding them.

.44cal 240gr DCHP recovered from a deer. 40-50yds. 110gr of BH209.

Passed through, broke a few bones, and still held together.

Well I think they performed more than well on hogs, which by the way are probably 3 to 4 times tougher than deer on shoulder shots. Shooting into media, while okay for a somewhat basic baseline, really doesn't show much in comparison to live game performance. I mean unless a whitetail is filled with sand, what the hell is the use of shooting into sand? Or a tree for than matter.

At the load levels you might tend to use the 250's will work very well on game. I have shot them with a 120 grains of T7 trying to blow them out going into wet saturated clay soil. This same experiment prove to much for some of the tested Hornady's. A forum user has used them quite often - hog hunting and they worked very well for him. I would not have a problem with into a deer class animal.

WVHunter - did have a problem with them in his testing and because of that, he or I, if I had same problem would be hesitant to use them also.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I could not get the 270's to shoot accurataly in the Extreme. I think they load to loose. I'm using the green sabots packaged by Hornady. I ran into the same problem, after checking my notes, when I shot them in my Triumph. I could not get them to shoot with BH209. I could only get good accuracy with 2F Blackpowder (85gr).
