Default 240 Deep Curl--J's

This morning a bullet as rare as the unicorn, the 240g Deep Curl Hollow Point was used on the water jugs. Once again the powder charge was 50g Blackhorn, sabot was the green crush rib, primer was the W209, and the range was 25 yard. The bullet went through the three first jugs, and bounced off the fourth. Luckily, the bullet was found a tad forward, and just a little right, near the horse, on the ground. The impact of the bullet on the label of the fourth jug can be seen in the photo.

Wow ... now I see why they are so popular. Beautiful expansion and good penetration. I have to check my supply of them. I will see if the Optima will shoot them well.

And that is why they are my favorite (they work great on deer too!)

They did amazingly well in my bullet testing in damp sand too.

Maybe we need to start up a collection to fund the gallon water jugs... and fwiw, you are getting really good at finding bullets in 2' tall grass

I have said all along the Deep Curl is a 'poor man's' Nosler Partition. Controlled expansion and a bonded copper jacket.

To bad the governments and private contractors have to that recognition also. Speer's contract fill orders is huge + Federal is trying to bottle the bullet for their own ammunition production.

I have a buddy that has about 150 Curls. I believe his dog and wife would go before those Curls. Maybe not in that order.

The .429/240 grain and .452/300 grain Deep Curls perform as well as the best premium bullet out there. The 250 grain - almost as good. I've always gotten good expansion and an exit hole with the 240's and 300's. With the 250's I've gotten good expansion (and dead deer) but exits have been a 50/50 proposition.

If you can get them to shoot well out of your gun, another great bullet is the .41/210 grain Deep Curl made for the .41 Mag cartridge.

I checked my stock... two boxes of 300 grain Deep Curl and one box of 240 grain Gold Dot. The 300 grain shoot so well out of my rifles.

1874, I know alot of folks like that bullet too, but I personally don't. They blew up on my testing (as did the 180). The design of those is different than the 240 & 300... it has a very deep hollow point, compared to the shallower on the 240. Not saying they are bad, I just prefer the design and performance of the 240. Probably some of what happened had to do with the media, but again...those were the only bullets that failed in that media our of all the ones we tested.

Semi said he's had good luck with the 250's, and I know SL has as well... and others. So I'm not writing them off, I just prefer the other style.

Sounds like good project funding bullets to me

They've killed every deer I shot with them. But I stopped using them because the 240's and 300's were more to my liking.

The last deer I shot with a 250 was a good size doe at about 125 yards. It was a broadside mid-chest shot. She traveled only 30 yards or so after the shot. Fortunately it wasn't in one of our thick briar patches. There was no blood trail at all The bullet did its job. Both lungs and the heart were destroyed with the bullet under the skin on the far side. But I'm certain either a 240 or 300 would have produced the same damage and exited, giving a good blood trail.

I wouldn't hesitate to use the 250's in a wooded area with open understory or where you can see a deer that goes down within 50 yards of the hit.
