Question for long range shooters
Just out of curiosity i was wondering what bullets you long range muzzy shooters prefer . I have tried saboted bullets quite a bit in my inlines but havent been able to do as well as when i use heavy lead . Therefore at this point i still prefer a heavy lead conical for long range .
What about you ? Sabot or conical, which do you prefer . And by long range im talking over 300 yards . Say 300 to 1000 |
I can't see a conical being better than a sabot with a better BC.
|
You wouldnt think so . Im not sure why i have such a hard time with saboted bullets over 300 yards . Doesnt make sense .

Have you tried the 350 and 400 grain high BC bullets in a sabot?

Don't shoot long range anything here in the low lands of Virginia. But I do know that the NRA BPCR uses heavy lead bullets for their 1000 yd range shots. I know these are cartridges, but it isn't much different when we talk about ballistics. the Army uses a 220 gr bullet in their 300 Win Mag. sniper rifles. Larger bullets week to be the thing for longer distances. JMHO on what I've read over the years. ;)

I shot a couple 3" groups at 400 yards with the 230grn Lehigh. 135grns of Bh209 by volume.

Parker Match Hunters are going to be hard to beat for a high BC sabot bullet. They wont expand easily at most ML speeds at longer ranges. The jacket is pretty thick.
|
Part of the problem is there are no sabots long enough for bullets heavy enough to hold down the drift. Any wind at all will drift a light bullet and there are few days we do not have at least a good breeze here. I believe that with a sabot designed for it the 350 or 400grain .458 would hold its own.
|
You wont find many 452s or even 458s with a good BC even upto 400gr. Parkers 325gr MH is about the best available but the velocity needed for expansion will limit its effective ML hunting range.
Its cost will limit its usefulness for target shooting. $2 a pop will get expensive fast. Hawks bullets offers some custom bullets a bit cheaper than Parker or Rocky Mountain bullets. RMB makes the bullets for Parker. Hawks ML bullets in the past had some quality control issues with the points. Not very uniform for precision shooting IMO. Speer offers a dandy .458 350gr but its BC isnt that great. If you knew someone with the equipment to reshape the ogive, you might be in business. Barnes has a .458 400gr Original Semi Spitzer which might be worth trying but its still a $1 a pop and has a very thick jacket. ![]() |

Those prices make my 300gr WM bullets, at .40 each, seem like a heck of a deal........

How does $70/50 work out to 40 cent each? That is the price on the UF website. Even subtracting $10 for the included sabots they are still $60/50 http://ultimatefirearms.com/store/de...ary=&keywords= |

http://ultimatefirearms.com/store/de...ary=&keywords= What appears to be misunderstood is, when I purchase bullets (which include the sabots), I purchase bulk. When I purchase propellant, I purchase it by the case. |
Thats a mighty big discount vs retail even if you subtract his high price of $15/50 sabots. Sounds more like wholesale pricing to me which im sure i could acquire from a few other brands if i bought enough.
I know where to buy the 458 325gr FTX for around $36/100 but the difference is anyone can get them for that price if you go to the show or have his business card. I can get Harvester smooth sabots for under $6/50 and so can anyone else if you can walk into Grafs. Yes, you are getting a deal at wholesale pricing but can anyone that gives him a call? |

I purchase in bulk shooting as much as I do, which helps me keep costs down. |
