Which 209 primer to use

Hi guys,I am kinda new to muzzleloading,I have a Thompson Center Triumph Bone Collector. I plan on shooting 100 grains of pyrodex, and a Barnes 250 grain t ez. What 209 primer do you guys recommend? I have read that some 209 primers are to long and will not allow the gun to shut. Thanks

Winchester, Federal, and CCI will all work fine.

It has been reported that there is a possibility that the Winchester W-209 is long enough that it will not allow you to close the action. In my Triumph and my Omegas that has not been a problem.

Other primers are shorter and might need to be used.

This chart shows some of the primers and the various lengths

Instead of chancing the longer Winchester, better off with the Remington, Cheddite or CCI Standard. Less fouling / residue of the burnt primer to deal with.

I use either the CCI Standard or the Remington Kleanbore in both my Knight and T/C. Actually yesterday when I shot, I was shocked how little residue I had using the Knight red plastic jacket with the CCI Standard. After 14 shots fired, it looks pretty clean around the firing pin and breechplug still.

Everyone here stated I would have a mess with that red jacket - should have purchased a bare primer breechplug, but just the opposite occurred.

Me, i would try the 777 primer.

That would be my suggestion too if the OP is going to use Pyrodex or even loose Triple7.

Regular Win209s would be my next choice. I never noticed them to be any dirtier than other non mag primers in roughly 7-8 MLs.

My son's Triumph is setup for BlackHorn 209 powder so we use CCI209M's, good fit and great ignition. I tried W209 primers in it once and it closed but took a lot more force to do so.

I would do as posted and try a muzzleloader 209 primer and see how it goes.

Thanks for all the info guys

Any experience with the Cheddite primer with muzzle loader?

I have some from shotgun reloading when others were in short supply. I see from the table above that they are shorter. I understand that the Cheddite diameter may be slightly larger.

I also use them reloading trap.. and you are correct shorter and slightly larger in diameter. If they will fit in the primer pocket of the BP they certainly will make the gun go boom! I think there heat range is somewhat cooler than the Mag primers but not as cool as a W209.
