All the extra energy of a mag primer is useless if its ending up in your breach instead of the barrel. CCI209Ms come out very dirty and Fed209As are not too bad but they build up carbon kinda fast. I got the same results in all my DISC based rifles with several true Lehigh NFPJ conversions. Win209s and WinT7s came out shiny. Shimming the primer pocket for a shorter primer is always an option if you feel the need for a mag primer in a Knight/Lehigh bare primer system.

I can use either Fed209As or Win209s in my Savage but it does not head space on the nose of the primer. I use both depending on the powder im using. Both come out with a slight amount off soot. Both have been reliable with powders harder to ignite than BH209 in a less efficient plug than the Knight/Lehigh design.

I dont typically use a 8lb sledge to drive a nail but i guess you could.

When there is hard scientific data not only by the manufacturers, but by independent labs and other independent testing and all the testing coincides, then its fairly easy to rely on the published data.

Years later and I'm still fighting this gun.....
Gave up on it for awhile because it was so frustrating. I don't know many muzzleloader guys and this is my first one so it's been tough going and a learning process.

I've changed loads, powders, etc and can't get anything to group.

Is there anyone in Iowa that would be up for a coaching lesson? Haha

Idk what else to try. At days I want to just sell this mountaineer haha

Your breech plug sounds shot out to me. Have it drilled out and tapped for a ventliner.

Be a helluva lot easier if it didn't have the dam brazed vent.

It sounds like some one did not clean the perseverative out of the barrel.
Suggest scrubbing the barrel with a brush and a solvent.
Swabbing the barrel with the other subs like 777 is necessary with Blackhorn it is not only not necessary but in all my inlines it causes accuracy problems.
Get a drill to fit your BP and clean out the carbon every 10 shots by hand.
Changing to mag primers will only help if you have a poorly designed BP.
