Default Deer With A Patched Round Ball

Distance: About 50 yards
Gun: .54 caliber TC New Englander
Powder: 100 grains of Black MZ
Cap: #11 Winchester Mag
Patch lube: GoJo
Bullet: PRB

Today was the last day of OK deer gun season. Took my Remington 700 in .30-06 and the .54 caliber TC New Englander and headed for our deer lease. Went for a long walking hunt and saw nothing. Went to the area of my favorite stand and saw little fresh deer sign. Headed for a stand on the point where West Cache Creek makes a horseshoe bend. Decided to take the .54 instead of the centerfire rifle: i usually do that.

The creek is in a deep channel with steep sides. There are a few deer and hogs trails up the bank. That stand over looks three deer trails.

At 17:15 saw a deer come up the bank and stop. Immediately fired and the deer took off. Went to the point where the deer was standing when shot. Followed the blood trail for about 90 yards and found the deer lying in the access trail. That is the exit hole.

That ball made quite the exit wound. Congratulations on a nice looking and I bet eating deer. Always nice to do it old school.

Way to go Falcon. Great shot placement. Those .54 balls are bad medicine.

Nice! PRB did its job.

Man, I spent most of my range time getting my Disc Extreme setup, I didn't put a shot down range with my Hawkin. Jealous.

Thanks, everyone.

The deer was standing behind a tree with just enough showing for a behind the shoulder shot. The way the deer took off i thought the ball had hit the tree, but that was not the case. The ball clipped the inside of the deers near side shoulder.
