Thoughts on a Fast Twist 45?

https://www.prbullet.com/s45.htm

Interesting review from Precision Rifle in the " new " fast twist 45s. Note it was written 10-15 years ago.

I've been thinking about a 1/20 twist to shoot big lead conicals. Have these thoughts changed in recent years?

Bullets and accessories are very limited in 45s. That's why I stick to three different twists in 50 caliber (28-48-66) and a long barrel 58 Renegade percussion I own.

For more information on shooting the real heavies and how it applies to today's rifles, not 10-15 years ago, you should contact Dave at No Excuses bullets.

It's very simple!!! If you want to shoot longer high bc bullets it's for you. If you don't it not necessary at all. I like it cause I can shoot any saboted bullet short or long.

The more specialized you get the more difficult it is to find any choice in bullets.
I have a 1-28 and it does quite well with the available bullets a 1 in 24 would be ok I got rid of my 1-20 it was a bit touchy for me I do not know if that was a quirk of an individual gun or typical of the 1-20 I know Tom likes his and he is pretty sharp.

My .451 Whites with a 1-20" twist bbls just loves big conicals. But I'm shooting them under 1400FPS. All I know is shooting a 465gr conical at around 1200-1300FPS would probably be enough to stop a freight train and the bullet would be found in the caboose. GRIN

Its simple, which 45 twists won the most titles at Friendship?

1-18 and 1-20. This includes this years inline hunter match.

What are the most common twists in 45/70

1-18, 1-20 and 1-22

At least one year (out of 5+ wins) Knight even used a PR Bullet in a sabot. Cecil neglected to include that part (the twist) in his advertisement for them. https://www.prbullet.com/pt.htm

Cecil is coocooo on this subject. I know guys shooting his bullets at smokeless speeds IN a 45cal 1-20.

My Pacnor 45 1-22 will sling a 200gr sabotted bullet over 2800fps with no problem at all. It will shoot big lead conicals upto 1400fps with no problem at all. It will shoot nearly any correctly sized .451-.458 bullet WITHOUT a sabot over 2500fps with no problem at all.

My 1:20 Knight shoots the heavy saboted Precision Rifle Bullets and the No Excuse Conicals pretty good.

My 1:22 McGowen .45 likes the PR240gr Dead Centers at smokeless speeds..

I once in a post stated my White M97 was a 1-30 but was corrected... its a 1-20 twist. I found it shoots large conicals with extreme accuracy and I also discovered one afternoon that it shoots sabots very well. And I can push them hard, and still be accurate.

I changed out scopes on it the other day. Due to reading some of Grouse's comments on the Redfield Revenge, I put the Revenge on the .45 caliber White and moved the Bushnell Elite to my .22 caliber Sig Sauer 522. I have to sight the White in still, but want to see how well I can make the Revenge work for it.

I have three 45's. I have a 1-18 twist .458 Green Mountain barrel on a renegade, a 1-30 twist .451 Green Mountain barrel that has never been shot, and a Green Mountain 1-30 twist .451 that is on a Hawken that I love.
I have shot some great groups with the 1-18 but I think it really wants a bigger bullet.
The Hawken is shooting a paper patched 409 gr RCBS 11mm rifle bullet. This bullet shoots so well in the 1-30 that I just haven't shot the others much. I would like to shoot some 500 gr or bigger in the 1-18 with a real smooth sided paper patched bullet. I just haven't done it yet.

I have a 1/18 twist Knight bull barrel 45cal muzzleloader. I believe it's one of the ones that won Friendship one year. The 1/20 super disc will out shoot it with Bloodlines.
