White = best group ever!
Took out my White this morning to try an new combo hoping to find my fall elk hunting load.
White mod 97 whitetail .504 with 75 gr of 3fg 777 and a 460 grain bullshop 0.504 bullet. Fiber wad under the bullet. Rear Williams peep and front fiberoptic bead. 6 0'Clock hold. My first target was at 50 yards. First two bullets touching but way high. 3rd shot: over adjusted low. 4th bullet adjusted up but not enough. 5th,6th, and 7th touching on my aimpoint! Backed the target up to 100 yards and shot two more shots. Couldn't bring myself to shoot a third as I knew I would screw it up and flinch! Anyway, think I found my elk load! In addition to the accuracy was that fact that this bullet was not dropping at 100 yards. Lots of momentum on this bullet and it seems to be fairly flat shooting with this load. Will shoot it out the 150 (my max distance for a muzzy shot) before the fall and see where it hits there, but looks like I have a winner http:// ![]() http:// ![]() |
Hard to beat a White and a Bullshop , that's for sure . Definitely a good elk load . Good luck on your hunt . That load ought to do the trick

A few years ago I might have worried that low of a charge was suspect on elk, but have had enough guys say that with that size bullshop and the 3fg powder, that is more than adequate for elk. I feel pretty comfortable if I put it where it belongs, he is going down!

A white rifle is a conical shooting master, without doubt. And the M97 is a great rifle. So your rifle has the 22 inch barrel?
|
Yep, 22" barrel, model 97 whitetail hunter.

Thanks Sabotloader!

Nice shooting,
White,it's just a better gun !!!! |
I meant to order some replacement parts when I got the gun, but didn't shoot it much and didn't use it hunting so that got put on the back burner. Are they still available? I have an old email from a Steven Brown about parts. Is he still the guy to talk to?

Update on the parts I ordered from Steve. Ordered pretty much all things that could get lost or wear out (breechplug, spring, endcap, hammer, etc). Placed the order through paypal on 7/1. Received my entire order today.
Not too shabby. |
Update on my White in pursuit of an elk load. Decided to jump up my amount of powder and try and get some extra ummph if the accuracy was still there. It was!
Shot 90 gr of 3fg 777, a fiber wad, and the 460 gr bullshop NEx bullet. Got 1 inch groups at 50 yards (basically all touching) and a 3 inch group at 100. I can personally do no better with open sights, so I will probably use 90 gr of powder this September. That of course depends on how my neck feels tomorrow. Shot about 20 times off a bench and off sticks, so should be a good test of how my neck handles it. Feels OK so far. |

I have shot as much as 110 grains of 2f 777 and a BS 460. That was just too much recoil for me. But the accuracy was exceptionally good. Other then me. I found myself anticipating the shot and then the accuracy fell off.
That 90 grains should drop an elk with ease. Good luck in your hunt. |

One thing to watch out for when shooting the lead conicals is if you start using too hot a load you will start leading up your barrel and your accuracy will suffer until you get the lead outta there. I think with that 90 grains of 3f you are on the borderline.

Ive shot upto 80gr of BH209 behind a 460gr 45cal. IIRC fps was around 1400fps and i saw no signs of leading but i imagine that is about tops before it starts.

where do you get your wads and what size do you get. i have not used wads with any of my whites just because it is one more step to reloading. do you think they make that much of a difference ?? thanks

yeah i agree not to mention the extra cost if you don't get any noticeable improvement.
