HIP REPLACEMENT part 2

Well I'm home!!! I went in yesterday at 0530 and was in the operating room by 0700. It took only 1 hour. I spent the night and was released by 1230 hours. It is good to be home.

I am totally surprised at the level of no real pain. There is a lot of soreness, but virtually no pain. They had me up and walking about one and a half hours after getting to my room. I was surprised to know I was putting full weight on that leg. Amazing!!!

They have me on a walker for the next week or two and then a cane. I am also pleasantly surprised to realize my limp is gone!!!

Ah, life is good. Now it is time to cash in on my wife taking care of me for the next week. She is a good woman and that is another story of how lucky this guy is!!!

nchawkeye 05-07-2014 01:05 PM

Dang!! You are doing good, Mom was in a nursing home for 2 and a half weeks going through rehab...

Of course Mom was 88... :)

Glad everything went well!!!

cayugad 05-07-2014 01:33 PM

When I took my father in for his hip replacement it was fast. The second day, he was up with a walker going all over the house and he too reported no pain, just sore, like he bruised it.

I am glad to hear your surgery went so well. But take it easy and work in slow. No use running track yet. I am contemplating a knee and ankle replacement. As many years ago I was busted up pretty good, but I refused to have parts so now in old age the old bones are really getting even with me.

Did they do both the ball and socket?

DJfan 05-07-2014 02:54 PM

I'm due for one soon. Glad the technology is that advanced now.

lemoyne 05-07-2014 03:21 PM

Good for you. hang in there, you will be ready to go come hunting season.

CalHunter 05-07-2014 04:01 PM

Congratulations on the good news!! Take 'er easy and enjoy the recuperation.

Semisane 05-07-2014 05:03 PM

Yes, it was a full hip replacement. It's amazing!!!

Hey Semi, I got my honey bee caring for me. She's a great at playing nurse. Maybe I can get her to give me a sponge wash!!! He, he, he!

Semisane 05-07-2014 05:45 PM

Thare's nothing like a caring woman rafsob. You're a lucky man. As for sponge baths, she might rather hose you down with cold water.

:cool2:

You'll have PT?

From personal experience (knee)-don't get ahead of schedule, stay with the program.

Muley Hunter 05-07-2014 06:08 PM

I'm confused about the no pain. Are you on pain pills?

rafsob 05-08-2014 10:09 AM

I have a lot of soreness, but no real pain. I did have some pain last night because I rolled over on my left side and hit myself. I am taking some pain pills to manage any discomfort. If I move my hip in a certain way it will cause some pain. But there is no throbbing pain at rest or when I put full weight on my left leg!!

Muley Hunter 05-08-2014 11:31 AM

That's a pretty serious operation. Lots of things were cut up.

You don't think the meds are the reason you're not feeling pain? Have you gone without them to see how you feel?

I'm curious, because I was told i'll need to have it done one day too. I've been trying to ignore the idea.

bronko22000 05-08-2014 11:33 AM

Glad all went well and your home. Now if you need that walker for any length of time I have a scabboard you can use to tie to it for your muzzy?!

Actually they make an incision to the leg and then separate the muscles. They do this all from the top of your leg by the joint. Once the joint is exposed they saw off the ball from your leg bone and clean out the arthritic socket till they get to rich blood supplied bone. They then insert the bionic replacements and then close the incision. There were no stitches. They use some type of glue and a tissue type cover that will wear off with time.

So, with littorally no tramma to the area, there should be little pain. And I'm enjoying it. There is a small amount, but the soreness is more annoying then anything!

Hey Buddy, glad to hear from you. The pain came directly from the joint. It was a degenerative arthritis and the pain was getting worse and worse every day. I had to take pain meds to get through the day. I'm thinking that this was the best move I have made in a long time. The operation was last tuesday and I can actually walk with out a cane or walker. The only pain I'm having now is after my rehab exercises. I am taking Ultram/Tramadol for it. It takes the edge off and I'm actually feeling good. I have started to walk around my neighborhood circle and it is working nicely. After that I ice it for a few hours.

Hope all is well of you and the bride!! It was a very nasty winter for us down here in Virginia, but it was vey nasty for you guys up state NY.

gregrn43 05-13-2014 01:41 PM

Actually hip replacement is much easier on the body and faster recovery than the knee in most cases. I've seen both surgeries done in the past. The knee is a rough one. Glad Ur getting along good rafsob.

Glad to hear all is going well. My work buddy has had both done. He's running 5Ks and feels great. The technology is amazing.

I don't run 5ks with original equipment.

.... Just had a total hip replacement myself.. the surgeon said the operation went well, but it was a real mess in there, due to me putting it off for so long and really grinding things up. He had to do some pretty extensive repair, I guess. Kept me off my new hip for 4 weeks. No weight bearing on it at all. Had to hop on one leg with a walker, and spent 4 weeks in a skilled nursing facility with therapy daily. I am home now, however, and doing well. Walking with a cane for a little balance and support, doing a fair amount of walking just holding the cane for assurance. I will say that ALL of the pain I previously had in my hip and knee are totally gone. Just soreness in the affected area and some residual swelling, which is slowly going away. I do have home physical therapy workouts I do daily. Everyone says I am really doing good, and I feel I am also. Hope to be back to most normal activities ASAP.....

Good for you pal. My only problem is what I call crazy pain. It will start to hurt in different parts of my left leg. Now this is as if my nerves in that leg are going nuts whacko!!! Other then that I'm doing great. Get to see my surgeon on Wednesday. I'm happy. I do need to build up my strength in my left leg.

I think I may know what you mean by nerves and/or muscles acting up. My operation was on my right hip, and about three weeks after that, occasionally I would get "involuntary" spasms, were my lower leg and foot would go nuts, twitching and convulsing for a short period of time.. always when I was sitting in a recliner or laying in bed with my feet elevated. It has gradually gone away, as I've not had that for some time now. Lord only knows what the cutting, sawing, pounding and cementing has caused to happen in there. Hope your discomfort goes away soon, also...

Glad all is working out for ya. Yes the past winter here was the worst I ever experienced, I've never seen so many continuous below zero days in a row, they seemed to go on for ever. Plus I never experienced -40 Below Zero, now that was COLD! Our Spring is off to a real SLOW start, cool and lot's of Rain, it looks like things will finally start to turn around this coming week end. Were doing well, Thank's and Wishing you a Full and Fast Recovery!
All My Best!

Well it did stop finally. But I think my problem was that damned Tramadol. I had been taking it for months and I found out it was the lowest level of opiate. I think I developed a dependency for it and I ended up going through a with drawl. Been a few weeks now and I'm feeling great!

I'm working on building up my strength in this hip. Not sure if I'll be climbing any trees this fall, but will give it a try.
