nipple blow out

Anyone else seen a nipple blown out when the gun was fired?(side-lock).
Was hunting with my cousin years ago and he was hunting with a side lock got a shot at a 4 pointer,he killed the deer but when he went to reload the gun the nipple was missing.
My brother was shooting one to check his load before going hunting and his pick-up with a camper cover was sitting about 20 ft behind him, when he fired the nipple blowed out and broke his rear window in the camper cover.
I figure that at one time or another they had strpped the threads some when cleaning???
I used to shoot one a lot but never had the nipple to blow out.I think they were very lucky that one or both didn' t get hurt.
Just happened to think of this while reading another post on nipples and thought I would ask.

I have also heard of that happening, and it is a scary thought. Never seen it happen or had it happen to me thank goodness in 25+ years of shooting the things, but I saw a fellow come to a range once with a rusted old smokepole, and there was rust all around the nipple port. Needless to say, I moved away from him. Funny thing is he shot that old rifle and it fired flawless.

I know this is a very serious subject so I will resist the urge. ;) Haven' t seen it myself but have sure heard of it happening to others. Scary to say the least. Stripped threads or wrong threads (wrong nipple) or maybe just corrosion could cause it.

Your brother' s experience sounds worse than most! That thing came out with some force!

It scares me just thinking about it.I really think these boards help, passing along infomation. You can learn alot by just reading.I saw a couple weeks ago where a 19 yr old boy was shooting smokeless powder in a knight muzzleloader and it blew up the barrel and a piece of it went throught his head killing him.
All you fellows and girls be safe and have a good season.Get a big one.

Not unless the drum or nipple threads were stripped!! Very dangerous happening! Always use a nipple of the correct size, and don' t let some ham-handed gorilla tighten it up!![:o]

My father-in-law had a CVA back in the mid ' 90s that almost cost his an eye due to a blown nipple. For some reason, (from what I can recollect), he thought the nipple had come cross-threaded and never would seat well. Well, when he went to shoot, the nipple blew and ran right down his hand b/t his thumb and pointer finger....It cost him some stitches and luckily has was wearing eye glasses. Scary stuff!
