Shooting Elk Hearts in the Rock Pit
 

Saturday - normally a day off for me from coaching softball - I finished some chores early this morning and then collected things to go shoot. I thought the Farm would be to muddy so decided to head to the Rock Pit. I was happy with the snow in the rock pit even though the temperature was really crispy.

Also with the talk about a 'fast twist' 45 and since I have not shot it since early hunting season I grabbed the Knight Super DISC as the rifle of the day. Also changed up a little bit from what I normally do and decided not to shoot Bloodlines. Grouse has been conducting multiple tests to show that the fast twist is viable with most any projectile. I have been doing the same thing and today I thought I would shoot some other projectiles. Both of the bullets I chose to shoot are really excellent deer getters - and I have know doubt about their ability to work.

Bullet #1 was a Nosler 40x200 grain - Sporting Handgun:

The rifle, sabot, primer, and the powder charge remained the same for the entire shoot:

Rifle: Knight Super DISC 45 cal. 1-20 Twist
Powder: 120 grains Triple Seven - 2f
Primer: Winchester W209
Sabot: MMP 40x45 Light Tan

I did collect sabots from the ground to check for stress and in one of the pictures you can see the recovered sabots. They were not much worse for the wear, so the sabot did hold up in the 1-20 which does create a tremendous rotational torque on the polymer sabot.

Accuracy was all-in. Shooting the 100 yard 'elk hearts' was not really a problem at all - 12 shots 12 hearts. Out of boredom I also shoot chips of the remains. One of the birds was a dead center hit and that one was fun to find.

The search goes on as to why companies do not offer the fast twist 45. With the polymer formulations both by MMP and Harvesters - they do work

Good report sabot the gun in the pic must be the ultra lite the bolt looks like the new gun setup for bare primer. I need to go shoot my 1-20 knight its been in the safe way to long.

Very nice shooting. I too see no reason why those bullets would not be deer killers. At the speeds your pushing them, they would be like a mild mannered center fire. Plus, the diameter of the bullet is bigger to start with.

It is an Original DISC 45 with a Kevlar stock installed and I have changed the bolt out using a Mountaineer bolt and a Lehigh Breech Plug.

I totally agree dave - they are moving right along. And both bullets are well made.

I didn't no the new bolt would work in the old disc did you have to change the trigger out for it to work.

a1 this was an original DISC rifle but it did not have the very first series of trigger they used. When the DISC first came out they used the same trigger that they were using in the older plunger guns. but some where along the line they switched to the normal Knight trigger that we now expect. So no I did not have to swap out triggers.

The bolt housing I am using is a Mountaineer bolt housing from one of my Mountaineers and the Breech plug is a Lehigh breech plug with removable vent liner. And I actually put an old bolt housing in the Mountaineer because I prefer just dropping the primer in the bolt versus placing it in the rails of the bolt face.

That's fun times right there! I had a buddy one time I took shooting and when I pulled out a box of clays he laughed at me and said "Did you bring a shotgun? I can't him 'em with my rifle"

I laid out several and let him destroy them. He was hooked. About 2 or 3 days later I got a text that said "When are we going to go shoot some more clays? Who knew shooting orange dirt was so much fun?"
