62cal Smooth Bore Turkey Loads
I have a GM 62cal smoothbore on a Renegade stock. I want to take it turkey hunting this spring but I have not shot this gun in quite a while (over a year). I forgot what turkey loads I had worked up for it so I though I would ask where a good place to start is? I shoot Goex and KIK FFG powder. I believe I was using #5 shot for my turkey loads in the past.

85 grains of goex and a 20 gauge three inch wad full of shot and an over the shot card is what I used. I always used a mix of 5 and 6 shot. But I limited my range to 25 yards. Good luck and let me know how you do.

I found that if I used shot cups, I could stretch the effective range out to 35 to 40 yds. The cups I bought come without any cuts in the side walls. You can conform them to your needs. I found that if I cut the walls in three places down the sides about 3/4 of the way, this works great for me. I only use a wad over the shot. I also used 85 grs. FF Goex.
I also have a TC side lock, New Englander. Love it. |
