Pick one to hunt with
With all this talk about Traditional guns and hunting lets pick one to hunt with and explain your reason for choosing the one you did.
Your choices are : 1. Lyman 54 cal 1:60 twist GPR 2.Lyman 54 cal 1:32 twist GPH 3. Tc Hawken 54 cal 1:70 twist GMB 4 TC Hawken. 50 cal. 1:24 twist Sharpshooter barrel 5. TC Hawken 58 cal 1:70 twist 6. TC Hawken 50 cal 1:48 twist 7. Renegade 45 cal GMB 1:28 twist 8. Renegade 50 cal 1:48 twist 9. White English Sporting Rifle. .451 1:20 twist Douglas barrel 10. Pedersoli's Rocky Mt Hawken 1:65 twist 11. Pedersoli Kodiak double barrel 58 cal 1:48 twist 12. Pedersoli's Gibbs .451 1:18 twist So which one and why ? |
I would pick #9 because I know how accurate that rifle is and I like shooting heavy lead conicals. I would love to get a traditional rifle with a quality fast twist barrel.

I'd take #10 with a PRB for muley's and elk.
The reason is I always wanted one, and it's the closest one on the list to a real Hawken. |
I don't know because I'm in a similar predicament I'm deciding what to use for my early ML season here in PA. I narrowed it down to two but undecided between my Accura V2 or my Renegade with the .58 GM barrel.

I'm thinking the fast twist Lyman with some heavy lead.
Why? Because its a fine rifle and a 535 No Excuse will be very accurate and very deadly. You won't need to track anything and it's respectful to the game. |

Guess I'm sol then.... |

OK then I would go with the #4 Renegade after elk and shoot what ever I wanted from it - conicals or sabots...
Probably would use a Lehigh .458-305 gr. (45-70 bullet) in a HPH-Orange sabot... ![]() 1900 fps. with 1220 lbs energy @ 200 yards... I could live with that... |
We're all very predictable. :)

I also don't see the Missouri River Hawken fast twist. Again testing with the paper patched bullet. For your question. I would pick #4 to shoot my Paper Patched bullets at elk. I have a couple #7 but they are 1-30 not 1-28. I use them for deer and antelope. I would LOVE to have the chance to shoot an elk with my 409 gr paper patched 45 bullets. Ron |

Going out on a limb, I would pick the T/C with the sharpshooter 1-24 twist barrel. I have heard they are exceptional conical shooters, so it would be good for deer or elk. Also I like the overall idea of the rifle.

Well your list is not very complete. I have the two guns I favor a 54 Renegade with a 32 inch Green river 1-70 twist barrel I use a .535 PRB and 120 grains of RS and my long range gun is a custom Hawkens I built back when I was building them it uses 130 grains of RS and a .535 PRB. I have taken a lot of deer [lost count over the years] and several bear as well as 6 boar with these guns and still use them.

Number2 because it's closest to my favorite TC renegade 54 cal. Probably the most versatile of the Mls on the list being able to shoot everything u can stuff down it. Plus it can kill virtually any game animal in NA. H
But if u are buying that double kodiak Ml is right up my alley! |
#2 is a Lyman 54 not a 50.
I will also add that the GM sharp shooter is not a Pedersoli Missouri River. I am not saying the Missouri river is better, but it is the only one of the two still in production. Ron |

And yes the list , Lemoyne is very incomplete . That way it didn't become to long of a list . This year I think I will try something different . :s4::s4: |

Ron My Lyman's and Pedersoli's all shoot about the same , the biggest difference is my Pedersoli's look nicer, especially the rocky mt Hawken in maple. But it doesn't outshoot my Lyman . |
I get guys all the time that ask me if the Lyman GPH 50 will shoot the paper patched 500 S&W bullets as well as the green mountains do. I really don't know, but some day I will run into some one here local and do some testing. I would really like to test the Missouri river. I had the chance to buy one in the bargain bin at Cabelas for a couple hundred dollars. I should have bought that one. Ron

Although i would love the White sporting rifle and a 460gr+ conical. im going to choose the Lyman 54cal 1-32 with a discontinued Hornady 460gr? FPHB. Not the hollow point they offered.
1) Its a hammer load 2) It would be one of the lighter choices that would fit my hunting style. 3) I like 54cals and prefer conicals. I would use the White Sporting .451 instead if i could get one that is a bit lighter. I would probably get one in a carbine and a 1-18twist. Then shoot a 490gr+ conical. |

Given that we can pick both the gun and the game, I would go with #5 and head for the squirrel woods.
|
I would select the TC Big Boer .58 cal. And go white tail hunting. Oh yeah, with a PRB bullet!
