Lyman GPH in 54
 

I have my eye on a Lyman Great Plains Rifle in 54 caliber. What do all the experts think is a fair price?

High...Low...Average

Haven't actually held it in my hands (yet) so the condition is unknown.

No expert. Condition and past use is key.
Seen em go from low $300 to $400+ easy.

I believe Tundra is right. Anything less than 300 for one in great shape is a real bargain.

You didn't mention whether it is flint or percussion. Flintlock rifles generally command a higher price than percussion. If it's a good clean rifle with minimal usage marks and a good bore... offer $300, maybe a bit more if it's a flinter. But first, ask the seller if you can run a clean patch or two in and out the bore, that will give you an idea of how it's been taken care of. If the bore is rough or the patch comes out rusty I would pass on it

Thanks for you advice. I did get this rifle but have not shot it. Paid a little more than I first thought about but seems to be in good shape. It is a percussion rifle.

you will enjoy the rifle. I have two of them. And love them both.

Here in Canada you can get one new for $525 or so.

I have an Investarm in .50 bore, I think they made the Lyman guns. Mine was made in the mid 1980's, I bought it used about two years ago. I love it, it was in great shape, probably had not been shot. The wood is much nicer then the T/C Hawken that I once had. The only "negative" is the low maximum charge that that Investarm recommends--90 grains with a PRB, 80 grains with a conical. It has a 15/16 barrel so I think it would handle more, but I stay with their recommendations. I think you will like the gun, congrats!!
