Peep sight is in
 

Well I got my Williams Foolproof sight in yesterday and the tang is down at the gunsmith getting a hole drilled and tapped in the tang.
One word of note however. I will be calling Williams Gunsights shortly. The directions tell you to drill and tap one hole using a #31 bit and a 6-48 tap on T/C Hawken or Renegades made after 1991 (when they stopped putting the third hole in the tang).
Then the boneheads supply you with a 8-40 screw for the sight and no 6-48! But understandably the 8-40 would have been the installation screw for the third hole if present.
Hopefully the GS will have the tang ready for me to shoot it over the weekend.

It will be interesting comparing resuts against the old sight. Did you get the 1340 sight or the 1342 with target knobs?

Bronko, you inspired me to get moving on this.

I just placed the order. It may not make a great difference at 50 yards. But will make all the difference in the world at 75 and 100.

I got the 1340. I called Williams and told the technical dept about their directions. The guy I talked to had the same sight on a T/C Hawken. But his tang had the third hole. We discussed the directions for the 6-48 hole vice the 8-40 screw supplied (the 8-40 is to replace the plug screw for the 3 hole tangs). He was totally unaware of this and said he would get right on that issue. He was very apologetic and seemed sincere so I wasn't too critical. If he would have been a smart a$$ I probably would have been a bit more explicit in my complaint. But I kept my cool and told him that I wasn't complaining but just giving them a 'heads up'. Even though my trip to the gun shop is a 70 mile round trip which I have to make again tomorrow to get my tang re-drilled and tapped.

I have a tutorial that I posted a while back on how to do this your self. I have done a pile of them and it is easy. I hope you have good luck with the peep. I know I like mine a lot. Ron

Now you need a good front sight. I recommend the Lyman 17 with the Lee Shavers insert set.

I like the round bead on the GM barrel. I can center it in the peep easily and a view I am familiar with because I have the same sight picture with my 94s and my other Hawken rifles.

Ron, I have a 57GPR peep on the rear of my .54 caliber GP rifle with the factory Lyman flat top blade up front. Using a 6 o'clock hold on a 3" bull I can do pretty well out to 100 yards. Also, it works really well for hunting.

I've never used a globe front sight. Do they make that much difference at practical round ball hunting ranges? And how about low light situations - can you see the inserts in that tube?

Semi, if we go and purchase a front globe sight we will have to buy brighter spotlights!. :hit:
