Olde Eynsford/Swiss vs Triple 7
 

I want to stock/carry just one powder for all of my arms (3F). So far I have a Ruger Old Army and .50 cal percussion Deerstalker.

I've been using T7 in my handgun and liking it a lot. I'm still breaking in my rifle with the Pyrodex I was given with my pistol, which I hate except for the smell.

I've been curious about using an energetic BP such as Swiss/Olde Eynsford.

I like the cost savings of OE, but wonder what benefit it may have over T7?

As I understand it the power generated by Swiss/OE is similar...

What benefits are you looking for?

Normally, a person uses real BP for the tradition of using a powder that sidelocks were designed for originally.

Pros:
BP has a lower temp ignition, so it ignites easier. Important to some guns like flintlocks. Not so important in modern muzzleloaders.

Some love the smoke and smell of real black (like me)

Real black should always be cheaper, except for Swiss.

Black has more of a boom than subs which sort of have a crack.

Recoil is generally softer with real black. (except Swiss)

Con:

Real black has more fouling.

Real black should be handled more carefully, but it's not as bad as some make it out to be.

I'm not sure I'm actually looking for a benefit. I know there are guys who prefer certain powders for certain reasons. I assume there are those who like BP more than just because it's traditional.

I do eventually want a flintlock. Something to consider...

I am curious about the smell. I like the smell of Pyrodex as it reminds me of firecrackers. But that's all I like about it.

The fouling is likely not a big deal. Guess I'll find out soon enough.

Yeah, it's the burned sulfur you're smelling. BP and Pyro have the same smell.
