A new one

Well I just came home and found out that I am the winning bidder on a brand new T/C Hawken .54 cal caplock. I should be receiving it in about 3 weeks. I guess it has a 1:48 twist so I just may try conicals in it. Anyone have any suggestions?
One other thought....Has anyone used a 300 gr or 380 REAL bullet out of a T/C .54 and if so what kind of accuracy did you get?

Why not a roundball??? A .54 makes an excellent deer caliber with roundballs...

A ball is all that's needed from a .54. But if the gun shoots REALs well they sure are user friendly - and cheap if you cast your own.

Gentlemen - I do cast my own (when I get a mould). I was wondering if anyone used the REALS in a .54. As for the PRBs Hawkeye, I have a GM .54 with a 1:70 twist for them. And I don't plan on using this one for deer. Possibly bear. But I would be willing to trade this barrel for a GM .58. But I have a promise out to someone else first. But if anyone has a .58 send me a pm and I will keep it on file in the back of my head.

I have hunted with both the 300 grain and the 380 grain REAL that I cast. I have a friend that has a .54 T/C Hawken Rifle and the 300 grain over 70 grains of Pyrodex RS is all he deer hunts with. He's shot some nice deer with it. I usually shoot 65 grains of Pyrodex or Black powder, a wad. and then a 380 grain REAL. I have shot several deer with them. It is a deer killer. Since I cast them, it is easy to get them.

My 54 Rene did not like the 300 REALs, however, I really didn't mess around long enough in load development for a comprehensive trial.

I have a pile of them if you want some to try. Just shoot me a PM.

I have used them in my .54 Renegade with decent hunting accuracy,I also took an elk with it with PRB and 120 gr RS Pyrodex, the elk only went 20 yards after being hit, it was around 35 or 40 yds out.

I always had great results with the 435 gr MaxiBall over 100 gr loose Pyrodex.
