loading black powder help?
 

Just got my first black powder. I know a little about it. I know that the powder goes first then the bullet then the cap. Is there anything that i have to put on the bullet or before it? I have both plain lead bullets and ones in a plastic sleeve. Which ones is better and is there a different process for each?

Just so we don't give you the wrong answer or something that is confusing.. could you tell us the kind of rifle you purchased, the kind of projectiles you intend to shoot, and the kind of powder you are going to shoot. I think with that information, the forum can better answer your questions or address any concerns about the rifle you might have.

I also suggest to new shooters... read your owners manual. There is a wealth of information about your rifle and what you can expect it to do. If you have no manual, go to the manufacturer's respective web sites. They are usually free to a down load.

Also in the top of this forum are a number of topics that if you read them... there are a few pages of them... but they can and do address many things you will encounter or perhaps have questions about.

But lets start with the kind of rifle and powder you want to shoot.. also the kind of ignition system it has, be it 209 primers, musket cap, or #11 cap. I think we can then get you started in the right direction.

Please don't do anything on your own without giving us more info.

I have a cva staghorn and a knight lk 93 they both are .50 cal and were handed down from my grandpa after he passed and no knows where the manuals are the caps are no. 11...idk what the powder is the label has been removed from the bottle

Proceed with caution. Once you understand proper operating procedures, this is a fun and safe sport. You must have a fundamental level of knowledge before you get stared.

Also, if you don't have time to clean your gun, don't go shooting. It's not lke a modern smokeless gun, BP must be cleaned or you will damage you inheritance.

The Staghorn will like 90 grains of Pyrodex RS and a MMP HPH-24 in .452 diameter. Then try the 240 grain XTP or the 300 grain XTP. Even the 300 grain Speer Deep Curl. That #11 ignition will set loose powder off just fine.

In your Knight LK-93.. try 85 grains of the same Pyrodex RS and the 240 grain XTP. I think you will be pleased with the way it shoots.

If you have no idea of the make of the powder you have... don't use it. Unless you are 100% absolutely positive it is not smokeless powder.

Do i need to lube the bullets with any or does the plastic sleeve do that

the sabot does that for you. All you need do is be sure to load the bullet in the sabot as one unit.

You really need someone local to see what you have to help mentor you...

Where are you located, maybe someone on here is close???

Also, I'll bet you can get online, google your rifle model model and download an operator's manuel...
