Here is what is headed your way. Ron

corey012778 01-12-2013 01:35 PM

wow.

that will feed both my knights and my white for a while before I have to make some up. the paper is onion skin?

deepcreek 01-12-2013 07:21 PM

Your going to love those pp bullets.Ron got me hooked on them last year.killed two deer with them last fall. one was in the chest out the hindquarter 125yrds,onechest shot at 50. Both DRT.Dont plan on recovering one from a deer. I dont think they even slowed down!

corey012778 01-12-2013 07:56 PM

I pp in 45cal. love how they shoot in my 45cal Winchester apex.

idahoron 01-12-2013 09:15 PM

Yes that paper is 9# onion skin. I am going to try to find something to pack them tomorrow. Ron

Muley Hunter 01-13-2013 06:40 AM

What are the bullets?

Underclocked 01-13-2013 08:50 AM

My guess - the LEE C501-440-RF without gas check.

corey012778 01-13-2013 11:40 AM

yes, the 501-440.

ron, I was looking up the paper last night. going to look around local before I order any. been using tracing paper to pp with.

Muley Hunter 01-13-2013 11:45 AM

I never messed with this. How does it work? Is there lube under the paper? Does the paper burn up on the way out?

corey012778 01-13-2013 12:59 PM

the paper becomes confetti on the way out of the barrel. no lubes. degrades the paper.

comparable fouling to sabots. in fact, if you think about it is a sabot. just a little more green then poly. lol

Underclocked 01-13-2013 03:20 PM

Did you ever have one of those little machines that rolled cigarettes? For some reason I think of those little machines when I look at paper patched bullets. :)

Some good lead, a heat source, a good mold, and an adapted cigarette rolling machine with some Zig-Zags might just do the trick. :D

corey012778 01-13-2013 03:57 PM

uc people have in the 30cal range.

idahoron 01-13-2013 04:02 PM

The nice thing about paper patching is it is legal in every state that allows conicals. The paper protects the bore from the bullet and the bullet from the bore. No leading in the barrel and the accuracy is amazing. Unlike some conicals paper patched bullets just won't move off the powder charge. The paper Patch allows us to use bullets that we could not use otherwise.
This Lee 500 S&W bullet like has already been said will penetrate. I have shot antelope, big deer and elk with them. I have never found a bullet. The bullet hit with a loud WHOMP. it sounds much like the hit of a centerfire bullet. The wide meplat of this bullet is the key to its WHOMP.

Another bullet that can be use is the one I use in my 45. I use a RCBS 11mm bullet paper patched and sized to .446 for this load.

Accuracy with this bullet has been amazing. This is the rifle

This is the groups from this rifle and load.

The biggest reason I like the paper patched bullets is dependability. Ron

Muley Hunter 01-13-2013 04:10 PM

Ron.......What would be a good bullet for the New Englander to paper patch? 26" barrel, 1-48 twist, shallow rifling.

idahoron 01-13-2013 05:53 PM

I don't know for sure. My buddy shoots the Lee 500 S&W bullet in his TC white mountain carbine. I think it has a 1-32 or something like that. Ron

Muley Hunter 01-13-2013 05:57 PM

You never tried it with the Renegade barrel? It would be the same thing as I have.

I looked at a chart, and a 425 gr bullet is suppose to be ideal for a 1-48 twist.

WV Hunter 01-13-2013 06:02 PM

Nice work Ron

I'm envious Corey...those are some bad a$$ bullets. Your gonna love em :D

corey012778 01-13-2013 06:05 PM

I have the set up do the paper patching my self, the mold and the sizer. asked ron to do them for me. wanted them done right the first time plus I am working on another project right now. my White lighting is going to be testing those first.

Muley Hunter 01-13-2013 06:14 PM

You're going to knock your whitetails into next week with those bullets.

corey012778 01-13-2013 06:24 PM

hoping to finally talk my wife into letting do a boar hunt in FL. still hoping the elk population in Va is stable enough in the next few year for them to open the season on them.

Muley Hunter 01-13-2013 06:26 PM

That will be a really hard tag to get.

corey012778 01-13-2013 07:13 PM

already be announced that is going to be a tag system for the elk, the counties that the elk has been restored in have first crack.

standard deer tag system. how it stands, if you spot an elk outside of the elk restoration zones. they count for a whitetail tag.

some of the paper patching I have been up to.

Is that .446 mould a custom mould? I am extremely interested in the fit and accuracy with your white. DO you have a knight 50 for them? I hope to get these bullets vacuum sealed and sent this week. The vacuum sealing I hope will keep them from losing their paper in shipping. Ron

I don't have a good renegade barrel to try them with. All the Renegades I have I bought with bad barrels. I got them very cheep since the barrels were crap. I do have them but they are tomato stakes. Ron

Muley Hunter 01-14-2013 04:43 PM

No barrels are made for the New Englander, so I have to make the stock barrel work.

I'll figure out something.

Probably just keep it for shorter shots with a PRB, and use the Knight Wolverine for longer shots. It's got a 1-28 twist, and will have the same Williams peep sight that you use. #11 cap ignition. I like the idea of long shots with big conicals and a peep sight. Something new to try.

the mold was picked up at an auction, so I don't know.

I have two 50cal knights.

That was a good find.:party0007: A .446 mould has to be custom from lee. I was going to order one.

You will like those 500 S&W bullets in the knight's. Ron

Plus with PP bullets you can increase your velocity from 1400 or so fps up to about 2000 fps without worrying about leading your barrel .

flounder33 01-17-2013 03:20 PM

Do you have to take care about what kind of paper you use so it isn't too abrasive on your lands?

Preferably linen paper . Stay away from wood based papers although onion skin is the most popular and is wood based. I don't use it unless it is at least 25% cotton . Linen is best but harder to work with and a whole lot more expensive , I don't know but I bet onion skin is the most used or just plain tracing paper even though its not the best . Just my opinion for what it's worth

idahoron 01-17-2013 05:11 PM

I use 25% cotton onion skin. I have enough for me and my boy for a long time. That being said it is getting hard to get but it is still available. Ron

corey012778 01-17-2013 09:36 PM

everytime I went to check the sites that carried onion skin, there out or stopped carrying it. have not done an search lately

corey012778 01-18-2013 03:46 PM

I got the bullets back from ron. if all works out and nothing funky happens monday. I should have a range report
