cabelas powderhorn scope 3x10x40

well after buying it last year I did finally remove the *** Bushnell banner and mounted the cabelas PowderHorn scope 3x10x44MM
So gar so good all went well used a bubble level on the scope and gun and the older cheap tasco bore sighter,I am not sure if you guys from the old school remember what they look liked Hey they do work.
I think the scope on 5 power has about a 4" eye relief works well on the CVA Optima thumb-hole stock set up.

I have had mine for a couple of years now and it has proven worthwhile for me. Hope you enjoy yours.

I will tell you that Cayugad got one his to break, but Cabelas totally too care of it.

cayugad 12-17-2012 12:13 PM

I have four of them now... I managed to break one. Called Cabela's and all is well in the world. Great store. But also a great scope for the money. Sabotloader is the one that got me interested in them because of the luck he had with is. I have them mounted on Green Mountain Barrels, and my Optima has one. So far, they are doing well.

The one I did manage to shake apart was not the same model as the one you have. If that is any comfort. And when I test rifles, scopes, projectiles, etc.. I am never easy on them. I want them to break. I want them to fail on my range and not in the woods where I might be depending on the item.

I will give it a shot on Saturday my shoulder is getting better so a few shots at 50 yards with 95 Gr. of BH 209 and a 240 XTP mag will get it started

jcampoli 12-17-2012 05:37 PM

Yeah, thanks to sabotloader's and cayugad's darn posts I now have 3 myself! One is camo and sits on my wolf, the other two are black, one is waiting in the wings and the other is on my old knight mk85. They are clear at the range and as I found out this year quite good in the woods too. Just hope they quit putting them on sale!

Good news -Bad news! LOL
I just ordered the Powderhorn EXT 3X10 - 40mm on sale for $49.99

gregrn43 12-17-2012 09:31 PM

I might have to give one a try. Sounds like a pretty good deal.

Josmund 12-18-2012 02:52 AM

I have two. I paid a lot more than the going rate today but they have been good reliable scopes. I compare tem side by side to my Nikon Omega and don't see much difference at mid day. They are a long scope but I can deal with the size.

At this price, I may need to pick up a couple more for future use.

SuperKirby 12-18-2012 06:15 AM

I have one as well, but haven't taken it out of the box yet. I plan to put it on my Encore one of these days and work on load development and coyotes. In a perfect world MN will finally allow scopes for muzzleloader season next year so I won't have to take it off.

lonewolf5348 12-18-2012 06:28 AM

I will report back after Saturday range session so far the scope it sharp and I think it may be a keeper .I have both Buffalo SSB 325 Grains and the 250 Gr. Shockwave and last my favorite bullet the Hornady 240 XTP mag all shot with BH 209 .
I will say the test will be at 50 yards only for now.
I know the rifle will print a one hole group at 50 yards with my other scope the bushnell banner 3x9x40 made in ***an.

gman57 12-18-2012 06:52 AM

The last time this scope came up in a thread I coundnt help myself and ended up trading some Cabelas point and a few bucks for one, and I have to say I think its a great scope for the money.Crystal clear and has been consistant with holding settings on the Accura I have it on, as was found out by a doe Sunday.

cayugad 12-18-2012 07:12 AM

gman.... did the doe have time to complement you on your scope selection? Or was she a little busy falling down? Congratulations in the field. Glad to hear field reports on the scope.

Dropped in place Caygad might say she bowed to the bullet.:p

WV Hunter 12-19-2012 04:21 AM

Not to be a party pooper on this thread, but I had one, and honestly I didn't like it at all. It seemed like a decent scope (for $50), but I just didn't care for it. I guess I'm just used to higher quality optics, I don't know. Something about it when I looked through it just didn't work for me.

TNHagies 12-19-2012 05:22 AM

In my opinion, that scope is the best VALUE in scopes right now. I can't break one even throwing 460g lead.

lemoyne 12-19-2012 06:15 AM

WV Hunter
Well I am glad I am not the only one, it was not to bad for a cheap scope but with the loads I use cheap scope do not seem to last very long, in fact two more expensive ones have lost there hold on there innards, the only one that constantly holds up for me for more than 2 years is the Nikon, they have never fail me yet.

cayugad 12-19-2012 06:37 AM

Lee.. so you managed to break one? Wow, what were you shooting? I would like to copy the load and see if mine will hold up.

lonewolf5348 12-19-2012 06:54 AM

dave: go and get that load
I will give credit to guys who can handle recoil,Back when I use to load my 45-70 with 525grain Postal lead bullets and 65 grain of black powder these round will rattle denture if you have them on
I still have my original teeth

Semisane 12-19-2012 07:48 AM

I'm with WV Hunter and Lemoyne on this one.

I bought a 3x10x40 Powderhorn last February ($60.94 with tax and shipping). Seemed like a nice scope. Put it on my X7 for one range session. For some reason it just didn't suit me. I took it off at the end of that session and put the 4X ProDiamond back on.

Maybe it's a size thing, and I tend to favor the simple and short 4X. Anyway, the like new Powderhorn is sitting in my closet in its original box waiting for another try some day. My kids will probably find it there some day when I go to those piney woods in the sky.

jaybez101099 12-19-2012 08:09 AM

Im under the belief that you buy the best you can afford. For me its Nikon.. Leupold.. Burris. Who is the maker of the powderhorn scopes?

SuperKirby 12-19-2012 08:19 AM

I have tried to find out who makes the scope. From everything I can find, that is one thing Cabelas won't say. Generally Cabelas will not try to hide who makes products with their brands. While they may not advertise who makes their things, they'll tell you if you ask.
Except their scops.

lonewolf5348 12-19-2012 10:48 AM

I would bet it a large company in china same guys who make let say Simmons Tasco and so on.
I will say they stand behind there products with there name on it no question asked if needed to be returned
maybe here is the maker : Classic HX Optics Co., Ltd. in China

lonewolf5348 12-21-2012 09:12 AM

Well I did buy a Sightron SI on closeout with the German post ,this is my second Sightron scope the first is on a 30-06 mil-dot.The scope I purchased now seem to be made in a different plant they are out of the Philippines instead of ***AN.
I did match it against the Powderhorn from Cabelas seem real close on clarity.
I also did find the powderhorn did have more eye relief,I will give Sightron the edge but not by much,I can read the street sign out to 200 yards at 9 power with out any problems
I am going to head out tomorrow and see how the powder horn will shoot .

lonewolf5348 12-22-2012 09:27 AM

did range test it to day the scope did excellent I think it a great deal for money
Clarity :excellent
3 shot in a quarter at 50 yards 240 xtp mag and 90 Grains BH 209
