primer question
shooting my Knight disc extreme the other day and had trouble getting the spent primer out of the bolt. .50 cal, 110 gr.blackhorn powder, cci 209 magnum primer, 300 gr thor .502 dia bullet, 209 conversion breechplug. when i fired a primer without powder the primer fell right out as usual, but when i fired with a load the rear of the primer would swell and not drop out, had to remove the bolt and dig it out with a pick. have not noticed this with this load before, and i have shot alot of them. any thoughts?

A enlarged flash HOLE and carbon build up in the flash CHANNEL can cause excess pressure on the primer. If its an original Lehigh bare primer conversion, the vent liner can be replaced if needed.
I would also try a Win209 primer. Its all i use in my Lehigh NFPJ conversions. You can also dry fire the primer. That will push the primer anvil back into the cup a little and then the primer should fall out of the NFPJ adapter. |
+2 on the ventliner

it is not an original lehigh plug. bought it from knight. plug and flash hole are clean, worn flash hole, i'm not sure. #68 bit fits, #69 does not. thanks for the input.

I would try a Win209 primer then. Ive shot some very heavy BH209 loads with them and never had one stick or bulge the primer. They tend to seal up better also because they are a tad longer than other primers. That should keep the anvil from backing out.

thanks GM, i'll give it a shot, so to speak.

You are the 3rd person this month that has said the same thing about CCI-209M's sticking in the bolt. I woud like to share a couple of thoughts, with the Lehigh or the new Knight plug with a vent liner - using a mag primer is really not needed. Basically the plug (primer pocket) was designed with the W209 in mind, of course other primers will work but I would always start with the W209. In the case of the Lehigh/Knight BP I really think the Magnum primer create so much hot gas and such a increased amount of gas pressure in such a short time and combined with the natural blow back pressure from the bore they cause the actual primer portion of the 209 primer to push back out of the battery cap and are forced back into the primer hole in the face of the bolt. Oddly enough if you mic' just the primer they measure .209" and the hole in the face of the bolt measures up to .177". With that and a soft primer metal it will be driven back into the hole. As GM said if you recock the bolt and dry fire it will normally drive the primer out of the face of the bolt and it then can be tipped out. I really would suggest you try a W209 and see if the problem persists. People have also had good luck with STS 209's and regular Federal as well as Mag Fed primers. |
Thanks , Sabotloader, I will try the different primer. Surprising i haven't seen this till now, but you guys are the experts. Thanks again.
