Default New Personal Best.

A long time ago (like three years) I posted a perhaps overly long story of my first buck here. That first buck remained my best by quite a margin. Since then, I've learned a lot and am now shooting almost exclusively with the ML.

Almost three years to the day, at the same stand, at almost the same location, a new record for me. It's another eight pointer, but the difference is astounding, like comparing a Smart Car to a Ford F150 - both have four wheels.

So here is the new guy.

Unfortunately I only had my not-very-smart phone for taking pics. Once again, I busted my gut getting him out of the woods such that I am barely walking today.

Taken with an Omega X7, .44 cal 240gr Speer DC, 110gr BH209. Maybe 50 yards.

It's hard to believe I've only been doing this for a little more than three years.

He's a beauty Hubby. Tell us about the shot. Where did you hit him? Pass through? How far did he go?

Congratulations... Like Semisane.. how did the 240 grain Speer DC perform? I am sure it had plenty of power. How far did he run after the hit?

Congratulations. That's a nice looking deer. It's always a good feeling to shoot one that surpasses any previous one.

Semisane, recall this is a vineyard, and this stand is on the wood's edge. Before shooting light, many deer will be eating in the vineyard since there are plenty of leftover grapes from the harvest. Can't shoot into the vineyard so you hope the deer will get within range as they come back to the forest. This time I saw four deer head out of the vineyard but did not have a shot on any.

Was about to quit this stand and try an area that was out of the wind (we had 10-15 mpg with some gusts up to 20) when I heard some noise from behind me into the forest. Spotted this guy sneaking up from a stream and into the bedding area, which is impossibly thick. A quick shot and he collapsed.

Must have got his spine since he was down but not out. Had to finish him up close. Not sure if the first shot was a pass through but it certainly did the job.
