It's pretty much the same with all of the old classics. Take for example the good old 30-30 Winchester 94. It was one of the most popular guns in the 1940s and 50s, and sold in big numbers at a working man's price. But with a MSRP of around $1200 today, and with many new bolt actions selling for less than half of that, how many new ones are sold these days? There are thousands of them sitting in gun cabinets that haven't been shot in years.

Yes he IS serious! That's why I bought a Savage bolt action rifle this year with a Nikon 3-9x on it for $500 brand new! I couldn't TOUCH the Winchester 94's price!
Who would have thought that a .30-.30 would cost 2-3x more than a bolt action rifle!!! OK the Win 94 has a solid walnut stock and blued steel versus synthetic stocks and matte barrel/receiver finish - but still! The Win 94's aren't even made in the USA anymore and the Savage IS! And of course - even tho the .30-.30 HAS killed more whitetails than any cartridge in American history - it's not like the .30-.30 IS one of THE best cartridges out there these days! |
Wow! $1200 for a Win Mod 94! If I was going to spend that much for a lever gun, I would buy a Savage Model 99 in .250 savage. I know it would be "previously loved" and not new, but I have always wanted one. Heck, with $1200 in hand and a little bit of luck, I might just be able to walk away with two of those suckers.

saw that in price for them in a cabela's flier. funny, I can go to just about any gun shop and pawnshop in the area and find Winchester 94's used in good or better for around $350 to 400

The sad part is the tooling for the TC Hawken is long ago paid for. I'm sure it didn't cost that much to make them.
I suspect TC had nothing to do with this, but it's a decision from S&W. |

It is now. TC's are made in the S&W plant in Springfield Mass.
