Default Optima & Blackhorn?

I bought a brand new CVA Optima today. I was reading the owners manual and it said that they make a breech plug just for Blackhorn 209. Is it necessary to get this breech plug or will the one that come with it work? Thanks in advance for any information about this.

In my opinion the plug that came with it may work just fine igniting Blackhorn powder. However, one day when you least want it to, you will experience a hang fire. You can purchase the made for Blackhorn plug, or you can modify yours, or hire your plug modified.

I agree. The stock BP will work when everything is perfect, but will never be as reliable as the BP you can buy for BH 209.

You can even let Ron modify your stock BP, and it works perfect.

I shoot BH209 and picked one up last year for my Apex after I had a mature 8 pt in my sights and the gun went "fffsssttt" (very cold outside). Just the primer went off not the load (shot it again with a new primer and it went off just fine but that was back at the cabin). I've never had a muzzy do this to me while hunting so not exactly sure it wasn't just a bad primer but I decided to take no chances.

100 yard group 3 shot group with new breech plug from CVA website, 4th shot next to bullseye after scope adjustment

I would buy the BH plug or have one modified. Just one less thing to worry about.

If all it takes is a new plug to be SURE the rifle will work with that powder, then it is a great investmant. I am sure that rifle will be a good shooter for you. Keep us posted.
