Elk and lessons learned.

Went to scout an area where I will be deer hunting. Decided to take a couple of the boys along and have fun at the same time.
I only saw a couple doe but there were 3 bull elk there. I cant hunt elk there but it was kinda cool to see them.
Then we had fun playing paintball in the woods.

Lessons learned:
1. at my age (56) it's easier to fall down a ravine than to jump down a ravine.

2. getting up after falling down a ravine isn't easy.

3. you don't run like the wind, you run out of wind.

4. you can no longer outrun a 12 and 14 year old even with a head start

5. it hurts to get hit in the neck with a paintball.

6. you are never to old to have fun with your kids.:D

Sounds like a good day Sharpsshooter.

I've never fallen down a ravine. But I've prefected a method of jumping across a ditch and slipping backwards into the water. With a little practice it's easier than one would think and works quite well.

Well I have ravine falling 101 already under my expertise and back sliding into the creek at 10šs ... an experience in hunting 102 under my belt. Not to mention some of the more advance classes in those areas of pursuit. Wait until you get into brier patch and apple thorn clearing. Now there is one adventure that will bring blood to your face.

Sounds like you had a lot of fun. Any time you can have fun with the kids is a good day. And I too have discovered that the older you get the harder it is to do things that used to be easy. And those paint balls do hurt!! Voice of countless experience here on those things.

Sharpsshooter, Cayugad, one of you guys who are experienced in ravine falling should consider posting a tutorial in the Black Powder Reference Forum.

I'm sure we would all appreciate a "how to" with step-by-step instructions and lots of pictures. Some of us rarely encounter a good ravine and have no idea how to go about falling into one. Would the same technique apply to falling into a bayou, or a canal?

And pics are great! Some of us are more visual learners you know!

2 more late lessons.

1.the pain is greater 24 hours later

2. the welt from a paintball on your neck looks like a hickey to everyone in church.:D

No pictures or video , thankfully . Maybe next time out.

1874 - I particularly like #2 as I am all too familiar with attempting to get up after falling down into a ravine. However, I find that once you unwrap your knees from around the back of your neck and pull your elbow out of your ear it gets a bit easier.
