need help with CVA Staghorn
My son wants to hunt deer this winter and I remembered I had an old CVA Staghorn 1:32 twist .50 cal in the gun cabinet.
I got it in a trade (here I think) years ago and never fired it. It uses a percussion cap for ignition, and has a removable breech plug. A few questions: I couldn't find a breech plug/nipple wrench that fits it well in my cleaning box. I found one that I got it apart with, but the wrench is a bit too short to be efficient. Would this wrench fit it? http://www.midwayusa.com/product/479...e-wrench-steel I hope to find a fairly youth-friendly load for it (he's only 12), probably something in the 70-90 gr range using Goex ffg. What bullets might be good for accuracy with the 1:32 twist. I have a variety of sabot/bullet combos and Lee R.E.A.L. 250 & 300 gr molds. Thanks for any help & suggestions! |
i'd just go and buy the hex head breech plug and use a 1/4"wrachet with the 12mm socket on it.
The tool you show from midway looks like the correct one for it. |
That looks like the right tool. My CVA works great with the percussion cap ignition. 90 grains of Pyrodex RS and a 240 grain XTP shoots real well for me.

Thanks for the replies!
I'll try the XTP load! I've had good results with XTPs on deer in the past. Didn't know they made a hex head plug for percussion caps. Where would I find one? |
oh shoot, the hex head is for 209 primers.
