Pennsylvania Hunter 50 caliber

Today was a beautiful day. A light breeze, nice and sunny, and 72 degrees. So I set the target out and it said 46 yards on the range finder.

My notes were lost on this rifle somehow. Must have deleted the wrong file. So I started on what I thought the rifle liked. My Pennsylvania Hunter 50 caliber has a 1-66 twist. I remembered it liked large powder charges, so I started with 90 grains of powder.

Seeing that it shot far to the right, which I did not remember.. I loaded up with 70 grains of 2f Schuetzen black powder, pillow tick patch, and home cast ball. Moose milk is always my lube. Before I adjust the sights, I aimed a little left of the bull, on the left edge, and cut loose.

The hits did move over and I had one flier for some reason. I was swabbing between shots with Windex. So I changed to 80 grains of the same powder and again held on the left of the bull. This was a little better but for some reason the sights needed to be drifted to the left. So I made the adjustment of one line.

I then loaded up 85 grains of powder and shot the next group. It looks like it needs to be moved a little more on the sight and why it suddenly shot a little higher then the other rounds.. I have no idea. Could be the barrel was getting hot, and dirty.

I had not shot this rifle is a long time. It was fun to break out this long barrel rifle for a change. I was shooting Winchester Magnum caps.

Very good shooting. After shooting my .45 caliber Traditions Deerhunter the last time I went to the range I have a greater admiration for 50 yard targets shot with open sights. I could barely see the red circle on my target so I used the thick cross and used that to center on the target. The person I took with me didn't even hit the paper. He said he couldn't see the target. He needed new glasses though.

From what i can see of that rifle... it looks awesome

I was hoping to get to the farm today for some velocities... looks like it is going to wait for awhile.

Checking your target... were it a deer you would not have missed...

Those PA Hunters are good shooters. But I could never get used to the single trigger on it. I am so used to set triggers. But it looks like you have another deer slayer in your gun room. All you need is a minor sight adjustment. Nice shooting.

Dave,

My Mrs. has a Pa. Hunter carbine and it shoots well. It has "made meat for both of us (she lets me use it on occasion). I like to carry it when I'm on drive because it's so light and maneuverable in thick cover. It's the one I'm holding in my avatar.
