Renegade day

Picked up some RS and some lightly lubed felt wads yesterday in 54cal and so i took the renegade out that has the 1:60 twist barrel. Pretty darn good shooting today! A total of 8 shots a only 1 real bad flier. Im shooting off my tack driver bag rest as I am selling my lead sled. Wanting to get back to the old days when i could shoot good without the fancy rests and suck up some recoil.

The bad flier i had i caught myself squeezing my eye closed as i pulled the trigger :nonono2: Back to the old days for this reason.

Other that that, 8 shots total with no hard reloading and a big ol hole at 7 oclock!

Will up load the pictures later on. Next time out i will try 90gr and see how she goes.

I still haven't gotten out to shoot my Rene becasue of weather and so many chores to do. I have the shooting box all packed up waiting to go. I also have that .44 lever gun to shooot to see how that works. I sure hope my rene shoots the PRB well. After all, that's why I got it.

80gr Pyrodex RS, a new TC Hot shot nipple, lightly lubed wads, .530" home cast round ball, .015" patches.

1:60 twist barrel - Maker unknown.

50 yards - 10 shots. I had a few fliers from me clenching my eye closed when I'd pull the trigger but hey, im used to my lead sled!

Shooting at 100 yards with the same load.

Shot on the far left was due to the target box being knocked off center, My nephew was shooting the AK47 with me at 100 yards and he hit low and knocked the target box over at a co cked angle and I did not have a straight shot. Shot #3 fell right in with shot #1 after we reset the box and measure 1" apart. Three inches overall by counting shot #2. Not bad for a rifle that has the rear sight held on by gorilla super glue LOL!

Of course this stock originally belonged to Ray who recently passed away, so i am sure he too had a big smile on his face when things fell into place with this rifle.

Nice shooting MD.

1-60 Barrel

Is that a Green Mountain Drop in for TC?

MountainDevil54 05-14-2012 08:44 AM

Not a GM. Put together from a barrel blank and fitted with a tc breech plug.

One thing I notice in your shooting form - you seem too bent over. If you fashion a higher rest, so that you are sitting with your back in a more vertical position, you'll cut down quite a bit on felt recoil. That may lessen your tendency to "clench".

Semisane 05-14-2012 10:45 AM

Good point UncleNorby. I agree. You want your back as straight as possible.

Shooting Platform

I made a adjustable plate for my Bulls X7 bag. I can raise it up 2" or higher if I used longer bolts.

MountainDevil54 05-14-2012 12:05 PM

I agree, it wasn't comfortable shooting like that at all. I am just using an old patio table we had and its pretty low. I'll see about making some sand bags to put my tack driver rest on and see how that does.

Might be easier to just find a shorter chair to sit on.

Found a possible problem with the load i am using. Went back out today and again shot a 3" 100 yard group with 80gr. Loaded up 90gr and took 2 shots which measured 1". When i was reloading some 100gr charges i noticed the wad felt like it was straight up rather than flush against the powder charge.

Those 2 shots grouped horrible so i am thinking i should melt some of my bees wax/olive oil lube and soak the wads in them since they are so soft and fold up easily.

Other than that, the 90gr Load impacts a good 4" higher which i didn't expect but its extremely accurate and the recoil actually feels good.

A little more experimenting and then shes done as far as load development goes.

How are you pushing the wad down? If you're using the ram rod you're probably turning it. Just put the wad in a little ways, and push it down with the bullet.

If you're already doing that. Tighten up the wad as you say.

Or in other words...........never mind. :p

MountainDevil54 05-14-2012 04:00 PM

yeah i was pushing them down with the ramrod, i will do it your way next time out and see how she does. Really lovin that gun right now. Not as much as my other sidelock but still a lot of fun to shoot.

Semisane 05-14-2012 04:44 PM

Devil, on the shooting bench thing - you should make the rounds of thrift stores and second hand shops in your area and find yourself and old folding adjustable height ironing board.
